Your competitor is number 1 for a phrase, you look at all the sites linking to there site, and they have exchanged links with 6 pages of websites. From looking at all those sites, its all about exchaning links, i.e put our site on yours and we will put yours on ours when the link is up.

I dont particularly want to link to these sites, as they are of low quality, and would give no benefit to my own visitors, also only 1/2 of them are related. But I want to be number one for this phrase. What is best way to go? Do you just exchange links for the sake of it, even if the sites are same sort of theme, but offer no real quality, or do you buy links from elsewhere? I do want good position, but I dont want to link to crap.

    Added*

Also if 1/2 of the links there getting links from are non related, is it correct to say, that I would be in a better position by just getting the ones that are related (only 1/2) and then adding on another good few related ones?

Before you put a lot of effort into a reciprocal link campaign, you should know that Google has already devalued them and perhaps worse.

By doing that, Google will be "devaluing" itself. ;)

You are right. Getting relevant site links is more important than getting hundreds of junk links. You will be able to beat your competitor if you do that.

I am paying a monthly "rent" on quite a few links, most are pr6 up and a few .edu.
They have great effect on ranking.
why do you want to be in 1st rank?? I think being in the 3rd-6th position is much better then the first 2, ppl usualy click on the first 2, but leave fast, they stay longer on the 3rd or 4th site they open... think about it

In all fairness I dont think I am skilled or experienced enough to be choosing what placement I am in anywhere in the top 10 :D

    Hi

You are right to think that the more relevant the link the better it is, also if you can just get the link one way that helps a lot.

    What is the site about?
What keyword are you fighting for?
It might be worth your time to check and see if going after 2 or 3 other terms might bring you in more traffic than just the competitive term, then once you have some extra traffic you can look to spend some of the income on the hard to get word.

You sound like you are thinking about your visitors and what is important to their experience on your site and this is what will make your site a success, stick to your principles and you will get to number 1, link from relevant good sites and you will beat the competition in the long run.
