First full day of being a college student

I moved into my dorm yesterday. Today is my first full day of being a college student at Illinois State University. I am majoring in Information Systems - Web Application Development. With an IS degree I should be able to get a pretty nice job and with a concentration in Web Application Development I should be able to get the job of my dreams.

I was thinking about starting a blog and blogging throughout my college career. Think it's a good idea? I start classes on Monday. Seems like we are going to work with Java first.

Anyway, my dorm is SWEET. Anyone else here in college?

I've been in college for two years. Pretty boring going to classes. I'm currently going to an online school now, and hope to have it where I only have to go to a non-online class if I have to do experiments; something hands on. I can't stand sitting in a class just listening to a teacher talk.

I've spent my first two years mostly doing those english, and other junk courses. During this time I thought, "Didn't I already spend 4 years in High School doing this?" So when that thought came to mind, I decided to stop wasting my time, and go to an online school and plan to go to some hand's on classes that is something similar to what I am majoring in or something that I want to make into a hobby.

    Thanks :)
lol...sounds like you had a fun experience. I was already offered a job from a pretty decent size online company last summer, but I thought college was about the experience so I decided to go anyway. Like I said, with the degree I should be able to grab any job I want. I have a ton of experience in about everything you can think of online (besides porn maybe ;)).

So, blog...good idea or bad idea?

Congrats. College is a great experience.

I found the first two years to be a little dull. Damn those general requirement classes. :)

The last two years is where the meat is.

Only 1/3rd of Americans have undergrad degrees (sad). If nothing else, your college time will be an experience that you'll have for the rest of your life.

    Good luck with it. :)

Ahhh, freshy. Congrate with your new life. Many more new things will come to you to experience. Don't forget that you can do anything you want but think of study as a first priority and you will be fine.

I'm taking my general education at a community college. Saves a ton of money.

I'm still managing to get a degree in computer information systems, with an emphasis on networking.

    I start Wednesday :)

After 2 years of this, I'm off to the big city for the real "meat" as MJ puts it!

Expect to change your major at least a couple times, and use protection. Good luck!

You've got the right idea. Take all your general requirements (Eng 101, 102, etc), if possible, at your community college.

The classes are usually much easier, which is great for those subjects you don't care about, and you should save 30-60% on costs. Even if you have a grant and/or loan, that's more cash in your pocket.

Once you get to the 300/400 level classes (3rd/4th year), you're taking all the real stuff for your major/minor. That's when you'll learn everything that matters and do real-world projects.

The first two years do have some interesting classes, but being forced at gunpoint to take Geology with a 3 hour lab and field trips isn't my idea of a good time.

Although, my public speaking class was fun. Nothing like watching people trying not to faint as they are speaking in front of an audience. I always loved walking into class, getting a random topic and having five minutes to prepare a 5 minute speech on the topic. Yeah, good times. :D

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but is it ok not to have your books for the first few class sessions?

I ask because I decided to order mine used, only I ordered them somewhat late.

The expected arrival time is anywhere from 1-2 days to a full week after my classes start. (I only need 2 more books, but the classes that need them are somewhat tough. And I don't want to be behind. I go to class 2 times a week for them, so I'll be bookless for up to 4 class sessions or so.)

Gee, I'm off to a bad start :(

    Just tell your professor(s).

Usually the first couple of classes are soft when you're taking 100- and 200-level courses. Normally it's not until 300-400 level where they start kicking your ass on day one. :)
