SO i have a bass fishing website

    http://www.largemouthbasstips.com

if i type: (in order of least to most competition)

    Largemouth bass fishing tips
    i rank 75

    bass fishing tips
    i rank 4

    bass fishing
    not in top 1000!

so whats the deal? surely if i rank well in bass fishing tips i should rank well in largemouth bass fishing tips.

and ultimately i SHOULD show up somewhere in the search term bass fishing especially above "JASPER Remanufactured Engines, Transmissions, Differentials ..." which strangely ranks in the top 700

so are there any ideas for a very confused man?

If you worry about how Google works, you will go MAD!

I think you need to have a look at the anchor text in your links to the site.

Also, check the CONTENT of your site. Content is key to ranking.

Common sense and Google Ranking do not go hand in hand!

If you are really worried about it, check out googlerankings.com ultimate seo tool, maybe that might better explain what is happening and can point you in a better direction? Also, have you created an account in Google's webmaster tools?

You have a nice site. I agree with info above, maybe having more space devoted to an article and less to the sole sponsor might give you better rankings in the long run?

You home title page has: Bass Fishing Tips

You should optimize a page for largemouth bass tips as well. Including: title with largemouth bass tips, meta description, H1 and of course off page links if you can optimized for your desired key word

Not surprised you are no1 for that as it is the URL!

Your URL doesn't mention fishing or fish at all so that is why you are lower for those terms.

Any yes, of course the homepage is key.

Submit some articles about bass fishing on a site like ezinearticles (you can find lists of many other good ones here on DP), and link back to your site. If you get 10-20 links to your site using the text "bass fishing" or something similar, you'll probably crack the top 1,000 in the next update.

ok thanks for the tips. I will see what i can do.

I guess the main concern for me is that an Engine remanufacturing company ranks higher for a term that i should, in all essence, be top 20 in... i guess Google doesnt always make sense.

i already submitted a few articles to those share sites.

You also have too much content on your home page which is watering down your main keywords.
