In fact, people can still disguise using redirects (whatnot) to fool the taskbar. I suppose you have to test the pagerank from the google servers to get it right (although I'm no expert in this). www.seomoz.org has some handy tools

Even the toolbar can be off on PR. I'd suggest doing searches on 1st tier and 2nd tier keywords in Google, Yahoo!, MSN and Ask. Sift through the top 50 websites on each search engine and get links from all those sites.

I use SEO for firefox; it's a free extension, and it's really useful, you can check you PR, and also lots of data, such as incoming links from Yahoo, del.icio.us, Technorati, Alexa, dmoz, and Bloglines.

I think the best tool to page rank is google, it is true that there are others.
However the most reliable is google.
If someone knows one better than google please tell me.
    Thanks

    The toolbar is wrong sometimes.

    Instances:
    a) Page not fully loaded (shows PR of last visited site)
    b) Sometimes when you go in a site from, say, it's splash page, the PR sticks
    c) You clicked a link from within a site that was using a frame

There are probably more...but yes, it is generally reliable
