Joomla the best CMS?

I'm having a hold up starting a new site I'm trying to build. I wanted to launch it using Joomla 1.5 wanted to avoid using a 1.0.0.X version because I don't want to have to update everything later.

With RC1 being released I've tested it and seems much better, the admin seems 100 times better from the old mambo based core.

The problem, seems there is still a lot of bickering among the community about the course Joomla has decided to take. Seems a lot of the extension developer's are not happy and might not continue to do development.

So I'm, held up at this point not sure what I want to do. I figure I might as well ask around to see if there are any other sold CMS's out there that have a strong user community?

I've kept an eye on Modx CMS it looks nice, but it just doesn't seem to have the community support or add on that Joomla has. So I wonder if there are any others that can be suggested?

I like using Wordpress as a full CMS. I've used several, but once I broke down and gave it a try for that, I'll never go back.

Yea I use wordpress for a lot of sites. Toying with the idea of using Mu on this site, because it require a lot of "sub' sites on sub domains. What are you using for the CMs end with WP?

btw I thought I posted this topic in the CMS forum. If mods want to move it, it's fine by me.

As far as I can remember Joomla does not offer search engine friendly urls, which the joomla team may have fixed, and does not allow you to link to articles previously written. You can only link to articles which you are about to write.

So if you want power, go for durpal but the learning curve is very steep. Otherwise if you know php just use wordpress and modify it to suit your needs.

Well with 1.5 they did fix the SE url issues. That's one of the reasons I want to use 1.5.

As far as Durpal, I'll have to look into it more, I was thinking it was more of a blog script like WP.

JOOMLA works well as CMS, but WP is also a good option; if you want to try out a new one.

Your site looks good, but I assume you are using a 1.0.0.XX version of Joomla? What extension are you using for the front page news style set up?

I've used Joomla before, my only real problem with it, is my new site will be fairly involved as in multiple site. It will end up having at least 10 sub sites on sub domains, all under the same network.

So with that being said I don't want to later have to update the main site and all the subsites to 1.5+. I know the older version of Joomla can do everything I want, but problem is the new version doesn't have all the required extensions at this point.

So I'm kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place, as I want to get this project rolling and it seems like a lot of the extension developers are dragging their feet because of whole licensing ordeal.

So I'm debating on just going with something else.
