Whilst taking a good look at the layout of my site, and how user friendly it is, and how it looks to an end user, i was wondering about the advanced link stats i have installed. Would a user visits the site to find some good online games care how many backlinks the site had? I know if my mother came to the site looking for food and cooking websites, she wouldnt have a clue what PR/backlinks/indexed pages/dmoz/edu & gov backlinks were. Perhaps i will keep the stats on the detail page, but not bother showing them elsewhere. What is your opinion of this? Mike
Take it is an additional service you provide. Many people who visit the directry many not care but, some other do care (include me there).
i suppose those who are more web saavy might find them useful. it might help them further determine the better sites.....
for a bidding directory it makes sense as it is more to do with luring a webmaster to buy links However, for a general web directory i would not install one of those as it does not make sense Wont support that for a bidding directory, it more about what ur directory has got as like they say "The first impression has a lasting impression", not many will bother to see whats in the details page
If your goal is to offer information and make your site a resource to consumers then these statistics aren't useful. That data is more useful to webmasters which is the group you want to entice to submit, but building your site to serve consumers will create traffic to the sites listed and that will make the webmasters that have the sites listed very happy. Having a directory to only serve webmasters is the reason why the directory market is always under the microscope and accused of being glorified link farms. Obviously this is only my opinion and the way I run my directory. Each directory has its own function and reason for being.
I have tekime in my email contacts. He never visits the phpLB forum so i email him directly. He has not resolved this issue Thanks for your thoughts. I want to appeal to all users with my directory, not just show some flashy stat box to webmasters who understand them. I guess when appealing to all users the stat box is satisfying what would be a large percent of my traffic - webmaster traffic.
IMO, Directories are supposed to be more for the End-user (not so techy ppl searching for sites) and less for the techy people here who visit directories and other sites for resources to boost there business.... so like you said your mamma won't know much about that stuff if she comes searching for a site to your site... but than again you have to rank well in Search engines getting backlinks,.edu.links.gov links ,dmoz listing, exposure in order to rank well in SERP's so that others find your site as a means of finding other sites.... my half cent
perhaps i could add them all in a div. Then at the click of a button - poof. The user could decide whether to see them or not. Perfect me thinks
