I've actually applied to become an editor to get my site listed and I think I found out the secret. The only way to get listed on DMOZ is if an editor finds your site by themselves and likes it. Editors get 1000s of applications and they just don't look at them. They just have to naturally find the site on the search engines or by word of mouth. At least this is what I've learned on the DMOZ internal forum. This would actually make sense for getting the best quality sites up there. if their editors enjoy it, they will list it. It doesn't happen often.
So we have to bribe them? No matter what PR my sites are, i will not get approved. If ya volunteer to do a job, do it and not slack off for month's. Thousands of backlogs but still we don't get a email if site is rejected to know when to submit again. I think i submitted 3 of my sites 3 times each in past 3 years and still nothing. So i gave up trying to get in. There are higher PR directories that are better in my mind. Eh, time for a drink. Maybe someone will spot my other sites in search engines someday. lol
Sorry that is not true. Some editors do prefer to find their own links, but the majority do work on the submitted sites as well as going mining. But today i have spent several hours just sorting out the sites in one category that are giving 404's and trying to find replacement URL's. Would be nice if we had enough editors to look after the updates, 404's, review the submitted sites and go mining. Just need a trained army.
Given to exaggeration are we? Sadly some editors have felt the need to leave and some have been booted, just as sadly for some, but there is a substantial army of editors, just not big enough. Maybe the new input over the next few months will allow ODP to turn another corner, be more attractive and attract more editors. Speculation on that will not cause or change it, so I will wait and watch developments.
It took me six weeks to get listed. Sure wished I could tell you how they made their decisions. I'd like to know myself for future reference.
PR has NOTHING to do with it. Many sites with decent PR suck, have dead links, or are pretty much duplicates. Look at DMOZ and it's clones for a case in point. In fact, if DMOZ were to submit itself, it would not pass it's own test! I'd be willing to bet that many of those thousands of sites in the backlogs are sites that have been submitted three times by site owners that feel their high PR site is worth it, but don't bother to read the guidelines of the site or have crap pages. (and no, I'm not talking about you or yours, I really have NO CLUE what site you tried to get in).
Wow! huesped that really sucks. If it is the site in your profile you have provided unequivocal proof of the corruption of dmoz. Your site is completely meritorious, it is an excellent blog. You have updated it the grand total of 1 times since March. That is 0.2 updates per month. That those corrupt flee bags will not list it is shocking. Could you pm me the other sites. If they are anything as good as this site I think that we would have enough evidence to shut the buggers down for good. You know if they were able to be industrious as you they could possibly have as many as 2 or even 5 sites added in a five month period. Just imagine it! Just fantastic huesped, keep up the good work.
No imagine how much popularity DMOZ would get if submission process was open and rejected website visible in logs - humor/trash websites/forums would be flooded with links to DMOZ.
That's a good Question It's really hard to get approved on DMOZ, I have a website I submitted one year ago, and never even received any further information. Meti
Neither of the sites in your sig are likley to get listed with their current content. Is that the sort of further information that you are after?
nebuchadrezzar you seem to have a good grasp of what is good and what is not for DMOZ which is definitely one better than me. Just as a for instance I have just completed a new site at http://scottishsporran.com which I was thinking of submitting to the category at: Top: Regional: Europe: United Kingdom: Business and Economy: Shopping: Clothing: Men's Just wondering in your opinion what is the likelihood if an editor sees it what they would think. If definitely not could you give me a few pointers as to what you think. i.e not suitable due to content, lack of content etc. Thanks
It would save so much time (and space) if we just merged all of these 'how do i' DMOZ threads into one... the answer has been covered hundreds of times. If you pay me a $1000 non refundable fee i'll get you in there
If I may make a polite suggestion. If these threads annoy you so much then stop reading them. I do not obviously have your expertise in this field but only asked a polite question of another member.
Actually sabian1982 brings up a very valid point... Then again, without all the "how do I get listed" threads we'd not even this the ODP forum... However, if you answer THESE QUESTIONS it may help you to figure out why you have not been listed.
All that thread taught me is why bother at all. Fair enough then. I'll get on with the thousand other things I have to do.
Then you have learned your lesson well There are two rules that you can follow when submitting to DMOZ, but you only need to follow (either) one: Submit and Forget Forget to Submit
