If I have two sites in your own network, say widgetsandcogs.com and widgetsfornoobies.com, it's natural that you would link them to each other. Would they be penalized?

Google opinion about this is a little ambiguous. Also, natural reciprocal links is a rare thing. :)

This is fine, if the 2 sites content are different.

I would assume related but different content is acceptable. If I have a network of sites on various software products that are related like Photoshop, Fireworks, Acrobat, I would naturally link them to each other. I did this before SEO became an industry and I did it so users (not bots) might have a chance to find them.

I can't see how any sane search engine could penalize such a thing.

I would link one way, widgetsandcogs.com to widgetsfornoobies.com. But if it would help my visitors and sales I would interlink the sites.

It's fine to do. Just don't go overboard linking your own websites.

Nonsense. Organic reciprocal linking can and does occur with some regularity, especially among authority sites.

Yes, this is true, the only thing I will not do if the content of the 2 sites are close or even duplicated.

If the content is related and will benefit the visitors then go ahead and do it

I believe there are two important factors here.
    1) The trust of the sites
    2) Whether Google determines that you are trying to game the system or they believe the links are legitimate

cross linking always was and still is ok, however its benefits could only be gained if the linking sites are thematically similar.

Seem pretty safe to do so. But to make it rest-assured, put a nofollow on one of the link returned. That way visitors will benefit and you can sleep better.

I ve had mixed results with interlinking sites from relative backgrounds e.g. loans and insurance, imho it could go either way.
