Hi everyone, I am focusing my efforts on evaluating PHPLynx and PHPLD at this time. I would be interested in hearing any pros and cons comments on both of these choices. From what I have gathered so far, and I have not confirmed it: 1) PHPLynx appears to have better built-in spam control. However, I did notice that someone built an Akismet comment mod to PHPLD which I found very nicely implemented. 2) PHPLD source is open while PHPLynx is closed. Does this present any long term issues that I should be concerned with based upon real-life experiences? Thanks for any advice. Rich
yes open codes can be edited time to time .. you cannot edit phplynx unless you get the unencrypted version
Hi, Thanks for the additional information. I was not aware there are two versions. Appreciate the heads-up. Rich
i will be waiting for your evaluation hehe phplynx is a good script on its side but it limits you from adding into yours to make your site unique. You will always be dependant on the staff of phplynx to add new features, so technically you will never have anything unique. With phpLD, it is work and it does require you to collect peices of mods from places to places to get to a stage but you will end up with something unique and you will have control Every script can't just encode all the mods in it. Otherwise WP would've put in all the mods and save its users from downloading and installing and make it a encrypted version. So basically what i am saying is that both scripts are good on its point of view. One just gives you all in one hand so you can sit but you are limited because you can't do anything else to it scripting wise because it is encrypted. Whereas the other ones is full of options. Now i believe when you enter this business you have a set mind that you will be working hard in making your site unique, so the choice is yours. Also, if you dont want to make your site unique its better not to start one just a peice of advice because there will be 1000 other dirs just like yours.
Hi smub, Yes, I understand the advice I am getting about the platform. I also understand the need for some unique content. I very much agree. Since, I have had experience with Wordpress, I understand the need to have a stable core yet still have the ability to modify. It is inevitable. So I think my approach will be to try to out PHPLD 3, and use the minimum amount of mods, since mods tend to destabilize the platform, are difficult to maintain over time, and sometimes introduce security leaks. I definitely will be doing some amount of incremental customization both for the user interface and security, and I have been talking to the PHPLD group about the possibilities. Of course, I have to be concerned that any customization I do does not affect my ability to upgrade as required. It's tough. Thanks everyone for the advice. If there are any other comments, I would appreciate them. Rich
What do you mean it limits you from adding to yours? Aren't you forgetting to say that's because you don't have to add to it as it has most of the features already in it! Secondly the staff at phpLynx have always been open to suggestions and do thier best to add more features as and when they are requested if its viable. Sure your at the hands of the staff but the bonus is that the features added will always be free and they are more than open to suggestions, you only have to read thier forum for proof on that one. Coders are in a very small minority smub, so isn't it the same that most people are equally dependant on on the coders? You also don't know the coding capabilities of phpLynx as its been made php5 and even looking to 6, we can pretty much plug in anything to it so in theory we can make it as unique as we want. The question I'd like to pose is do people buy directory scripts to code or to run as directories? I'll bet my bottom dollar its the latter and if a script can do ABC and D without any added costs or coding, or reliance on coders then its surely the best one to go with. phpLD is as basic as it comes out of the box, that's not to say it isn't good, but to get it to the level of phpLynx you'd have an awful lot of work to do or a lot of money to pay out which can't be good. We can debate all day the pro's and con's of both scripts but in a nutshell you get a hell of a lot more for your money with the phpLynx script out of the box than phpLD, that's one fact nobody can get away from.
