    So what do you think?
Is it possible to get well ranked in google, yahoo, msn without backlinks?
    Only with great in-page optimization?

    Please give arguments. ;)

    Yes.

If you optimize your webpage for the keyword 'woloopimeshgnomadious', I'm sure you will rank number one with no backlinks :D

What I'm saying, is it all comes down to how competitive your target keyword is.

I think it also depends on the SE. I was ranking well on my sites in a somewhat non-competitive market right away on MSN. Google, on the other hand, took time for the domain to age and me building backlinks.

but it is possible to get decent PR with only couple of backlinks - but that won't get you any traffic

i had a thread here yesterday. i made a site and found a good keyword with good kw search volume "biggest cat".

that site is now on page one in google (now one position up even)..and this ONE day after i created the site !! All i did was some diggs and stumbles...and having that good KW. I was in shock myself.

Edit: or do you mean "rank" as in "PR" ? :)

i rank very high decent for very competitve terms and i have around 91 backlinks.

how do i do it? most of the competitors update their site once a year, i update it once a week with relevant, unique content.

For mundane keywords which give little or no traffic yes. For keywords which have competition, no.

Backlinks indicate trust. Without backlinks, there's no trust being passed to the site. But like abstrooose said, if you rank for a word like woloopimeshgnomadious, you might do just fine. ;)

I don't think I agree with not being able to rank without backlinks. I had a site that came up toward or at the top if I did a search via parts of the domain name. I didn't have any backlinks yet, only submitted the the sitemap and had it get indexed quickly.

Granted it wasn't a very common search term. I believe that you could rank with just site and domain SEO alone, just not normally very well without backlinks. Backlinks are a factor, but not the only part of the SERPs and PR.

You can still rank well, but only if there is no competition. Good on page SEO will help but backlinks help

backlinks is maybe one of the most important factors for increased PR and also SERPs, but never ever use only one technique.

always go also for SEO optimization, keyword optimization, oppage formatting,

and also continue with social bookmarking and other techniques.

    regards
