Like this list of legitimate, non-paid links you mean:

    http://www.smic.be/smic5022/favourites.htm

No way Google can know for sure, even with your points they would still be guessing, they cant be sure money has changed hands, meaning they will presumably use 'reasonable suspicion' to decide to ignore certain links... not really fair eh...

    I think your right...

Someone needs to tell Yahoo that their "PR" is in jeopardy hehehehhe

    http://dir.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/

It has SPONSOR RESULTS (What’s This?) (Become a Sponsor)

though their is a very big difference and that is that every category
has relevant sponsers.. ;) i guess much like adwords does

    thx

Yeah, I agree .... it's a bit of fun .... but I must say I have used to on some of my directories and the prediction tool was spot on ..... But in saying that I think you need to use it at the right time as it does vary greatly ... but I would only use it as hearsay.....

"Fair" isn't really one of Google's goals.

It doesn't harm them to ignore say... HALF of all legitimate links in an effort to ignore 90% of all artificial links.

Yeah I can agree with that ... Google wouldn't give a toss if a few valid links were ignored ..... I mean they owe us nothing .. it's their service we are using for free so really they can do anything they want with it ....

"...end this post"? Hardly! Experience shows that when the PR export is made public, this thread will go on and on with cheers, gripes, and page after page of "Hey, my site got PR___!"

You must be joking. You said the other day Matt Cutts doesn't really know seo. For real let me predict your future: you will waste a lot of cash and get little results. ;)
I hope no one listens to your advice, Google is smarter than you think. Just because right now you get away with certain things doesn't mean you outsmarted Google. They prolly give you the benefit of the doubt, cause they don't know if you're actively trying to trick them or if you're just an innocent webmaster who listened to the wrong person.

I'm new to this, but feel like I know a lot reading some of your posts. ;)

No hating on my part, I just hope no one listens to you.

I know you--but I am not sure you know me:(

most DPers --who r old enough know --who you r.

I respect you all the time-- what you said are so true.

But lemme tell ya and Matt something--

while I am aware of everything that is going on--
I have followed the conventional way of building links for my 3 directories and mixed both conventional and SPAMMING method for one of my new directories --just for experimentation.

I have bought links to make it PR4--and I have spammed to make it PR5+.

If I get PR4 --then sponsored links still count.

But if I get PR4 + -- then Google's New algo is nothing but to encourage SPAM.

If I get PR0 for my directory ( that even my closest friends don't know about) --then the sophisticated Google algo is excellent. All should follow it.

Th PR of my experimental directory will not hurt anybody-- but if my experiment is successful -- I would assume that --webmasters are always ahead of Google.

    I get PR0== Google algo-- 100% correct.

I get PR4 == Sponsored links for PR (not traffic) are not yet detected by Google.

I get PR5+ == Google algo is nothing but encouragement for SPAM.

FYI-- I am getting 20+ spam comments on my PR0 but high SERPs blog.

jhn, why is PR so important? Do you get more traffic with spamming or with links you buy? I asked someone here for advice and he told me he has a PR5 that gets almost no traffic at all.

    people care about PR for:

    selling links and making money
    self esteem
a selling point for a web directory or blog post

Last week I asked something about seo and one dude messaged me to buy a link on his PR6 page. I check my stats today and only got 2 hits all week from that site. Now I read this thread and think I got screwed.

Why PR is important for me?

    Only for one reason :

Once you get a decent PR , you can easily exchange relevant backlinks from similar web sites ; otherwise you will be ingored

Not a problem at all. :) I enjoy the updates, too. I was just commenting on the poster's naive expectation that a PR toolbar export would end this thread. Fat chance, if history repeats itself. I'll probably be posting too — most likely something like: "Bummer, my PR stayed the same despite all the new links I got."
