Considering the Domain Name Business

    Hello,

I am considering entering the domain buying/selling business and wonder if any of you would be willing to share your experiences.

Do you set up websites on your domains (basic or robust) or do you just park them, hold them for a while and wait to sell them at a later date?

I understand that fabulous it supposed to have better payment rates than others (i.e. Sedo). Have you found this to be the case? I contacted Fabulous. They mentioned that they charge $7 to park at their site. Sounds expensive. For that money, I would hope they pay well.

When you have a large number of domain names, are you able to negotiate better registration rates than the retail rate at GD, Namecheap, etc.?

How do you select names to buy? How do you value them? (Google PageRank?) Do you use expiration services (i.e. snapnames) Is there some software that you use to determine selection criteria?

I would appreciate any general or specific comments that you might be willing to share about this industry.

Thank you very much in advance.

I wouldn't expect to pay to park my domains and I wouldn't want to pay a site to list my domain for sale in their database. That's why I love Sedo. Plus Sedo has a massive userbase, which is very critical.

I use Sedo for parking, you get an idea about traffic to your domain and it is free to join. If you are selling the domain for traffic, the data is useful. You can also analyse the data for deciding on future purchases.

i share the views presented by all the members.......parking your domain gives you traffic details and the large audience that sedo got, who knows some visitor among millions may be a buyer for domain :)

I would say, unless you have a large budget to invest to acquire domains from existing holders, then you are a few years too late to just get into the market, and it will be very frustrating if you are getting in with a limited budget and think you can make your way to any success $20 at a time.
It's just not going to happen.

You could buy , sell and trade, crap..hoping to get lucky and make a big score, but the odds are against you at this point in the game.

The good ones are already owned by someone, and have been for some time.
You could buy for $10 and sell for $20 ("penny stocking") all over webmaster forums, but ultimately, you can do better working for $8 an hour.

    what drew you here ??

What peaked your interest - to cause you to want to consider getting into Domaining ??

I prefer Sedo for parking - right now (Aug. 2007)

My suggestion to you is to read everything you find in researching your area of interest...
and to focus your domain buying on a specific area...
don't try to spread yourself to wide - too - thin...

Making money in Domaining is hard work... it may seem easy...
but the truth is it takes alot of hard consistent work...

Good Luck in whatever you decide to do...

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. What drew me here? Yes, I understand that the domain gold rush was about 1.5 decades ago, but real estate is real estate. They aren't making any more physical, tangible real estate. People will speculate, buy some, hold it for a while and then sell years later (ideally) with a profit.

I assumed the same could be done with .coms. Yes, may need to spend some money on quality names, but beach front property costs more too.

DomainBell, I noticed that you have MANY domains. Have you owned them for many years or do you "flip" them?

What we are trying to tell you is (Or at least me)...you are entering into a field that you don't know, with a steep learning curve....and at least 5 years late.

I am not saying that it can't be done. but it's kind of like finally getting around to buying Oracle stock now that it's trading at a normal level.

Parking revenues are very low. A few domains may make parking fees and a little more. I buy domains for development and analysing trends. When I have wanted a good domain, it is unavailable, so now I buy suitable domains when I find them. Reselling is not an option, since most of the good domains are taken and buyers may not be willing to buy because of geographical constraints.

There is still plenty of oportunities in the domain industry but you should really spend time in research & not money at this stage.

I absolutely agree with this statement. You are too late unless you have a big budget 100k-600k to play with. With that you would need some very specific experience in domain analysis, and a keen sense for value (otherwise known as "luck"). Luck in this business comes with experience and hence you are too late. Good luck, but be very careful if you decide to enter and plan on loosing (lots) money on the learning curve....

    Just my two cooper pennies....
