So, as a competitor I can buy up 15000 links or point 15,000 links from my own inventory at your site and knock you out of Google?

I wouldn't judge us all by the calibre of posts in this thread, it happens with PR, things get crazy people get stupid. Its like the full moon for webmasters around here.

A temporary penalty? That's a new one... Whats funny is that whenever the next big website goes viral and gets picked up by all the media, instead of getting a "temporary penalty" it actually benefits from all the backlinks it accumulates in the short amount of time.

once again, there is a difference between discounting or nullifying inbound link value..... and a penalty.

And in this type of scenario, I would think that Google tends to perform the former manipulation more often than the latter. Otherwise big competitors would be trying to sink to each other and the little guys with their big link budgets.

Can you imagine being a little site that received 20,000 inbound links in a Quarter by your competitors? If the "penalty" was automatic or even slighty automated, it might kill your business for the entire next quarter or longer.

It's Easier to control supply than the subsequent demand in this case, so I doubt this type of "penaltly" happens often.

Thinking is easy - proving is hard. Knock me out of Google - go ahead - I dare you.

As far as I can tell, no...

I've had some baby sites go from PR N/A to PR0, and had inner pages get a PR bump, but that's it...

Has anyone on this forum seen an increase or decrease in the rank of the main page at your Web site?

To get a clear answer from somebody on this simple question would be of great interest to everybody!
