Most powerful country my arse. We're booming in the software industry. Everything else remains the same forever. The farmers will commit suicide, the politicians continue to be corrupt, the people continue to be selfish and has poor attitude. We're doing well in the IT industry because of the very low value of the rupee compared to dollar. When the value of rupee nears the value of dollar, all the Indian companies will be doomed and I'm waiting for that day. Now, before calling me a racist and giving me a red rep, please consider the fact that I'm an Indian too.

I think many countries are doing well around the world, and that can only be good for the world economy. Hopefully more people from these countries will come on the internet to increase the market size for DP's web entrepreneurs!

India isn't even close to being the most "powerful" country in the world.

The next possible hegemonic state is China and it will take them to 2050-2065 at present pace to achieve it.

China is ahead of India in most of the areas.

So, if US has to show concern, it is about China not about India.

From needles to .. Whatever you can think of, they come to US from China.
Including comtaminated food and Toys made with Led based paint.

    US can't even control that.

You are looking at it from only I.T. point of view. First let me tell you that there are ton's of indian companies now which are buying foreign companies. the tata corus deal was no way I.T.
The two most richest man in India are no way I.T. Related.
    Mukesh Ambani - petrochemical
    Anil - Telecom
I believe India is progressing very fast and it could easily become an economic power.

It will take time for India to catch up with China, let alone the US.

Although the growth rate might be impressive, most people still do not have a high standard of living. Not everybody has access to the internet. Not everybody is literate, for that matter.

Let me just be honest, my parents were in India only 6 months ago. People are still there working for pennies in peanut factories. I honestly do hope that the economy improves, there are still so many poor people over there it is unreal. India has a lot of people, so they could already be considered fairly powerful due to their sheer numbers. But their technology and economy is below par still I would say.

The economy is growing at an excellent rate. The US is not too concerned, as most U.S. states have economies bigger than some major nations (source: http://strangemaps.wordpress.com/2007/06/10/131-us-states-renamed-for-countries-with-similar-gdps). India and China have the benefit of very large populations, but that can also pose many challenges. These countries tend to grow in correlation to growth in the United States, and would struggle if the United States started to struggle.

There is a reason China has pegged their currency to the US dollar, even though the free market would have it valued much more favorably: they want it to be cheap for American businesses to do business in China. This helps keep Chinese people employed, but it also means the wages they earn don't buy as much on the world market and insulates their economy.

It will take a long time before China and India are able to develop economies that are strong without the support of U.S. business.

If we look at the per capita income levels, India is actually one of the poorer countries of the world.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP)_per_capita

The above list already factors in the cheaper costs in India - it is a PPP based list.

There are more than 100 countries in the world that have better per capita income than India.

Even if India were to continue growth at current rate, there isn't much chance that its economic conditions will be better than US's in next four decades.

India is a great country. They are doing good. As I know there are thousands thousands of people still below the poor level. Hopefully soon they will overcome that.
Trying to be the most powerful country is a bad intention I would think. Rather trying to be most peaceful country would be much appreciated. After all you are the people from the country of Gandhi.

India hasn't got a chance. China is ahead, and the fact is - once either are seen as a threat, US/UK will stop sourcing from there and move to another country in poverty.. So many will be jobless, which will lead to greater corruption. Next it will be Africa, etc.

Imo Japan will take the 'most powerful country in the world' title, purely because of the technology advancements over there.

    Who knows..

    No, it's not.

India's economy is due to America being able to outsource cheap labour to India.

If India's economy grows, they'd still have to pay more to have things outsourced to America, making the outsourcing completely useless. Plus, if America stopped outsourcing to India, India's economy would suffer a huge blow.

Plus China is years and years ahead of India in terms of economy and will be the first to overtake the USA.

the only reason for us to stop outsourcing will be when prices of employee salaries in india are higher then that of usa, so keep waiting for that to happen.

China is more than just years ahead of India. China has been funding the USA for quite some time now.

It's not inconceivable to think that as China develops, jobs will shift from India to China. China's middle class is booming and so are the number of educated people. China already took many jobs from Mexico.

And hey, when your economy is on the floor, it doesn't take much for it to have huge "percentage" gains.

Here's the real truth though. India, China or whoever is capped. All the corps outsourcing to India are doing so because of cost not care. This is why Mexico lost many outsourcing jobs. China became a cheaper, more viable source.

    Facts

But, let's get down to numbers that matter. The following data shows just how far China is above India.

People: China 1.3 billion India 1.1 billion

    GDP per Capita:

    China: $7,700 India: $3,800

Not only is China's GPD per capital double that of India, but their real GDP growth rate is 10.7% annually, verses 9.2% annually for China.

    China's labor force: 798 million
    India's labor force: 509.3 million

    Reserves and Gold

    China: 1 Trillion
    India: 165 billion
(China has 6x more currency reserves and gold and growing faster)

    Purchasing power

    China: 10.17 Trillion
    India: 4.15 Trillion

    The Kicker

China exports 974B and imports 777.9B for a trade SURPLUS of 145.66 billion.

India has a trade DEFICIT. They export 112B and import 187.9B. They are running a 75.9 billion deficit. And notice how much smaller the trade figures are.

China exports 21% of its goods to the USA. India exports 17.4% of its goods to the USA. The trades are continuing to veer to China.

Well,i would say you are a wise Indian,as everybody could see that India is developing fast, but there are lots problem remained also. The poor people in the rural area, the conflict with Pakistan, etc.I find many Indians have good feeling with themself and their nation, they did not compare India with other nations. If they did, they will find India still have a long way to go to be a most powerful country.
