I've just got my hands on Drupal these 2 days, and playing along with it the whole day today. Quite handy for my beginning indeed. and need some suggestions. I am gonna use it build a news page + forum + blog. Any good features or modules or techniques recommended? and have you guys created or heard of some nice sites using drupal? can share here? and more.. if i modify and add the site and everything complete in my computer, what are the good ways to upload the whole site to the hosting server? and things need to taken note of to prevent disasters? and.. sorry .. beginner, lots questions, what are the recommended hosting service very compatible for Drupal created sites.. for the one i wanna create? goDaddy good for that? thanks a million in advance.
Drupal is truly powerful, and has many (very advanced) options for organizing information. Good News For Open Source and End-Users: Drupal 6 gets OpenID support! ~~~~~ The only possible problem with Dpal is massive amounts of Database usage. Try not to add many extra modules, it has a lot already. ~~~~~
Also, if your Drupal site gets on the front page of Digg, with any regularity, watch out. You'll need a dedicated server. Drupal has a nice cache mode, but it doesn't output static pages, it just caches a snapshot of the database output. Try to get gzip enabled, that will help speed things up, too.
Drupal and Joomla aren't that similar. You might be thinking of Joomla vs. Mambo. I looked into Joomla and Mambo for a site we recently launched and decided to go with Drupal. Its a very nice system and the learning curve for new module development is relatively small. Our site: http://www.shoulditrade.com (Fantasy Sports trade advice site)
I run a relatively large and quite popular site/forum, with member-blogs on Drupal.. Drupal does everything i need and is VERY SE friendly.. and, it was on the front page of Digg while still on a shared-host and it never skipped a beat!
Drupal is good. But be aware of its limitations. For heavy traffic blog I advise you to stick with wordpress. Drupal cache is not perfect and the module autopath which can be used for SEO friendly urls is not very stable (atleast in my experience) Also you need to do a lot of design work before going live with a drupal site.
I didn't have any issues with pathauto (that's the correct name of the module). Though it's strongly recommended not to use -dev versions on production sites. BTW Drupal is a very flexible CMS, I build Drupal sites for 2 years now (mostly corporate stuff) But if you want to customize it seriously you should really dive into the internals, to see how things are going. If you're a developer, I bet you will appreciate the very well documented api.
Tried the script for 2 times with no chance to make it work as I want. I ue Etomite and I'm pleased with it. Drupal just didn't make it for me
Try http://www.drupalsites.net/ for a showcase of drupal-powered sites. And stay away from godaddy hosting. Sucks big time.
Well.. there isnt an 'assist with traffic' module, but the two things that I think helped me get my traffic were enabling SE Friendly URLs and the PathAuto module. These make my page URL's VERY SE friendly.. There's lots of other things i did - i outline most of them in my (now) free ebook which you can read in my blog, HERE.
dlisted.com is a high traffic Drupal based site. I remember reading a while ago that theregister.co.uk is too.
