Alexa.com is such a joke

First I would like to say this site is not a true measure of traffic.

Nor is it a measure of a value of a site. Sure it may tell you generally where a site ranks like for instance, everyone knows google, yahoo, msn will be top 10 etc. But after that it gets blurry. From my understanding if a user does not have the alexa toolbar installed into their browser once visiting your site Alexa has no idea of this visit. So if you get alot of traffic but by the internet's not so tech savy users who are still using IE 5, chances are you're in the 200,000 even though your site should be ranking in the top 50,000.

All I am saying is this, don't use this as a tool on judging others sites. It will just hurt you in the end.

Anyone have any words about Alexa?

 

Two of my websites:

1. Sports related site (the one in my sig).
Daily traffic: 3500 unique visitors
Alexa rank: 1,033,377

2. Unpromoted web directory
Daily traffic: 250 unique visitors
Alexa rank: 265,206

My view: It's absolutely useless.

 

Yep, hot a holiday site that received over 20,000 hits from search engines over 25,000 hits from other sites per month but Alexa tells me the rank is close to 3 million.

Do not care so much about that because the most important thing there is the search engine traffic the site is receiving.

 

Well, I have no solid proof but when I languish in the millions on Alexa it seems I don't get many sales. But when I pop up into the 200-300K range the sales seems to come. Go figure.

Oh yea! Alexa.com is a joke and what sucks is so many webmasters think its like God! I've seen so many people talk about how their alexa ranking sucks and they want to improve it. Why? who cares? And then when it comes to selling a site..people think that the higher alexa rating they have the more money they can get for the site. Well to some point yea but those stats are not accurate at all.

 

i dont really trust alexa's way of ranking so i always use google and yahoo a a guide.

 

Well its bound to vary according to the type of products / services on offer, and how likely it is that alexa toolbar users will visit such sites, or buy such products. I'm sure a much higher percentage of webmasters impact on alexa rankings in one form or another, compared to the average person looking for holiday offers on the net.

So, it maybe a slight help when comparing 2 sites within a niche where the toolbar is relatively popular.

Alexa is stupid.. often people judge our site using Alexa.. Not many people have alexa tool bar installed!!
So it is totally a stupid way to judge the traffic..
But it is a good way to judge american traffic because the percentage ok ppl using Alexa toolbar in US is higher..

with one toolbar installed you can take the ranks arround 200,000 but taking the ranks under top100k is not that easy!

alexa ranks are useless, but then since google is not taking care of the PR anymore, so alexa is going to get more value in the future!!

yes you can manipulate alexa ranks, but it is not all that easy! most of you says alexa is useless and it can be easily manipulated, and your own sites are above the top 100k! lol

 

i think someone has to develop a website that tracks all the sites, and track all your traffic, (inserting somecode on your page)
this would take long time, but will give us detailed rank of our website.

 

Alexa can only count traffic if their is a widget on the site or the person visiting is using the alexa toolbar and since webmasters tend to use the alexa toolbar more often its commonsense that sites like directories will have a higher alexa rank.

So put an alexa widget on your sports site and youll see your rank jump.

 

Alexa is having their own alogirthm and is generally useless..

Speaking of sucking, IE is horrible. CSS Transparency has no effect whatsoever in IE. So I can't even hide the widget button. Go figure.

EDIT: Well well well, what do ya know. IE does allow transparency. Only in TD's though. =-\

 

lol alexa? it's getting older and "girls" are dumping "him".

My site was down for 8 months but the fifth month when it was still down , my ranking is still increasing lol

 

I have a question, now i'm not trying to sound like a jerk. But is IgniteYourBrain.com supposed to be a sarcasm site?

Because by the looks of your category descriptions, it's just very odd to see in a site where one is trying to flex their intelligence and have stuff the site just make no sense whatsoever.

Maybe you just have bad English? Again, not trying to sound demeaning.
