$100 Logo, Icon Set, and Header/Footer/Margins Contest

This is a contest for a logo, icon set, and header/footer/margins for an independent start-up. The contest will be open until August 31. The full prize amount will be awarded if I use the artwork with my business, otherwise an alternate prize will be awarded for what I consider to be the best work.

“Upon a Star Vacations” is a business which designs custom itineraries for visitors of Walt Disney World. It is my understanding that elements which are distinctly Disney (Mickey Mouse, Cinderella’s Castle, the Disney font, etc.) cannot be used due to copyright/trademark issues.

I will be happy to provide feedback on entries (by private message if requested), and it will be up to the submitters if they wish to revise based on my feedback. I will require that full rights and ownership of the winning artwork be transferred to me; acceptance of the prize money will indicate the winner’s acceptance of this agreement. Prize money will be paid via PayPal. Please send me a private message if you have any questions. Thanks and good luck!

    Logo

Prize: $40. If no logo is chosen for my business, an alternate prize of $20 will be awarded for the logo I like best.

The logo should be professional, but not too serious/stuffy/rigid. A touch of “magic” wouldn’t hurt, but I’ll leave that up to interpretation. I envision “Upon a Star” (possibly in a slight script font) being larger/more prominent than “Vacations” (displayed underneath, possibly in all-caps with a serif font), but that isn’t a requirement – feel free to do your own thing. The logo will be used for a variety of applications online and in print, and so it should be in a vector format.

    Icon Set

Prize: $45. If no icon set is chosen for my site, an alternate prize of $20 will be awarded for the set I like best (for the alternate prize, the set doesn’t necessarily have to be complete).

Note: I highly recommend submitting 1 or 2 icons for feedback before moving forward with the others. I implore you not to continue with your concept if I don’t give your initial icons my approval; I don’t want to waste anyone’s time.

These 8 icons will be used both on the website and in print. The icons will be no bigger than an inch in height in print, but they shouldn’t be overly simplistic. I envision the icons being set over top of a circular border, as if they’ve jumped out of that boundary – but once again, feel free to do your own thing. The icons should have a colorful, slightly cartoony look. Keep in mind that the icons will be used in association with visiting Disney World, but Disney-specific imagery can’t be used. The icons are:
    • a ticket
    • a clock
    • a calendar
    • news
    • food
    • show (as in theatrical)
    • ride (as in amusement park ride)
    • water park

    Header/Footer/Margins

Prize: $15. If no template is chosen for my site, an alternate prize of $5 will be awarded for the template I like best.

What I’m looking for is a straight-forward design with no specific features; aside from the logo, everything of substance will be located in the body (which will be white or nearly-white). The site will be optimized for 1024x768, but the main body of the site will be 900 pixels wide, so the header and footer should of course be 900 pixels wide also.

OH COOL! I'll be entering this sometime between now and Sunday. I work from 8-5 so I don't have much time on the computer anymore, but I should have something entered by Sunday!

Thanks for sending me a PM about your contest! I hope you like what I enter!!!

Just a quick note: the logo doesn't necessarily have to be vector, as long as the source art can be provided or the logo can be provided in various sizes.

uponastar, if a person actually draws the image theirselves, even if it is mickey mouse or something, I think that it can be used. I've never actually used an image that I did'nt buy, that could be copyrighted. The point being so that I don't violate copyrights.

    Copyright

I will work on this contest this afternoon, and hopefully post my work by 8-9 tonight EDT.

I too understood that to use Disney characters, even when re-drawn, is against copyright laws.

Okay, I did these very quick, so if you like them I'll redo them much nicer!

gatlind23 - They look great! The one suggestion I have for the logo might be for the "upon a star" text to be bigger. Otherwise, the logo and icons are off to a nice start.

techSQ - Thanks for your submission! To be honest, I'm not a big fan of the various elements (the font, the pattern in the font, the image). To try and be more specific, it just doesn't quite fit with the vision I have for the business... the font is a bit too futuristic perhaps, and the image doesn't do anything to evoke what the business is about. I hope that's not too harsh, and I appreciate the time and effort; just trying to be as descriptive as possible.

Looks terrific! I really like the fading and the addition of stars. As long as you're still willing to make changes, my preference would be that the stars be a bit bigger (and fewer to compensate), so they're a bit more visible, especially on small versions of the logo. I'm curious to see the logo in a purpley-blue, and also with a "blue into purpley-blue" gradient, both top-to-bottom and left-to-right... I might hate it, but I'm curious. ;)

Okay, I made the stars bigger, and made one a nice shade of purple/blue. Anything else you'd like to see changed?

techSQ - Definitely an improvement over the first one, in my opinion.

kingcaw - I like your creative use of the mouse ears, but for some reason, it just doesn't seem to fit. I otherwise like it, although the "Upon a Star" font looks a little too standard/generic perhaps.

gatlind23 - Fantastic, thanks for trying out my suggestions. My wife wanted me to tell you that she gasped when she saw it. ;)

Well thanks, I'm glad you both liked it! I'll start working on the layout and I'll redo those icons so they look better since I was in a hurry when I did them!

    Hi there.

I was reluctant to post this, as I'm not 100% happy with the plane. I can't really spend too much more time on it though so I thought best to post it and get your opinion.

    Thanks,

I would agree with your thoughts on the plane; I think it would look better if the plane was removed, and the text was moved up higher to fill the space. I like it though, so thanks for submitting it!
