create one according to the sitemap protocol as given here - http://www.sitemaps.org/protocol.php see the sample sitemap there. create save it as sitemap.xml or sitemap.xml.gz or both upload it to public_html (or may be other folder as well, if u need) then add this line to ur robots.txt - sitemap: http://www.exampledomain.com/sitemap.xml If u use a CMS then implement a plugin that ll generate the sitemap automatically.

Now there is a uniform sitemap protocol and hence you can submit the same sitemap to google, msn and yahoo. If you are using a CMS like WordPress, install a plugin. So the sitemap generation is nothing more than a click. Also sitemaps will be automatically updated when you create new content. After ensuring that sitemap is ready, submit it to google, yahoo etc. I found that submitting to google sitemaps ensures that the content is indexed faster. You will need a google webmaster account for it.
Are there any sitemap options you guys would recommend for a custom built cms? The guys who built ours want to charge a LOT to create a dynamic sitemap system. In the meantime, Yahoo can't crawl past 2 pages of our site, even tho MSN and Google have no problems with a deep crawl. The free ones I've tried so far haven't worked out.
