Hostgator or Dreamhost - Does it matter?

I want to free up processes from my VPS and am thinking about getting hosting from one of these companies. Using one of those $97 off coupons it comes to next to nothing.

Does it matter which of these I go with? This is for my sites that don't get much traffic.

It's your money, do whatever you wish...and the coupon is applicable for a year only.

 

if you sign up for a 2 year plan with DH the $97 still comes off...:/

There are only two companies I use. After about three years of hosting many websites, I've learned my lesson about hosting. I'm gonna tell you what I like in generalities, but leave it up to you to click through and read exactly what each company offers as far as space/bandwidth.

LunarPages - Totally solid system, up-to-date cPanel & Fantastico, just all-around my favorite. Affordable too. You can get a good cheap deal on hosting with the "25OffHosting" coupon.

HostGator - Just as reliable as LunarPages but the cPanel and Fantastico isn't as up-to-date. Plus they are more expensive, but I have gotta say they do a great job.

I had a reseller account with HG and they offer a great way to resell with good forums...but yes it's expensive.

I changed to where I only sell hosting as an affiliate which works out much better. And by the way those links are my aff links so if you're gonna buy hosting with one of those companies I appreciate if you use my link!

(LunarPages' aff program is very good as well...actually its the best I've found.)

HostGator Sucks - Fraudulent Billing

Don't go with HostGator, it's run by kids... I use Peer1 for my dedicated servers. They're a little more expensive but they are all about the quality...

btw, if you need basic or reseller "private" hosting with CPanel, PM me. I'm not a hosting company, but if you know how to handle a hosting account w/o newbie support and you have legit (non porn or hyip/surf scammer sites), I have plenty of bandwidth and plenty of IP's (so your site looks like it's on a dedicated)...

 

I've used both. Currently I have over 15 sites, two of which have over 20,000 pageviews a day, hosted at Dreamhost. Took me a while to get used to their control panel but I've never had a problem with downtime and their support has always been very fast and efficient. Can't say the same about HostGator, which is why I left them.

Are the sites php/mysql? Any problems with that?

Yes, one of my high traffic sites is PHP 4 and one is PHP 5. You can configure which version of PHP you want for each domain in their control panel. Almost all of my sites use more than one mySQL database.

I use hostgator, it's ok most of the time, but recently I ran into a problem with them since they didn't backup my files, stating that I was over the 50,000 files limit, which apparently they have in their fine print

 

well, just make sure you don't use Hotgator.. the suck.... seriously

They want me to fax photo id in order for me to get ssh access. :/

I agree, hostgator is better then dreamhost. Because I have a host in hostgator and dreamhost, I feel hostgator faster than dreamhost.

Ok, but if you don't have enough of the money for ordering a VPS or dedicated solution. What will you do ??? .... only use shared hosting
