Barry Bonds & Cheating

A coworker of mine was talking to me about, how he dislikes Barry Bonds, because he took performance enhancing drugs to accomplish his feat. This got me to thinking. If you had the opportunity to use a secret substance or skill to out perform your competitors; wouldn’t you use it? If you could use a substance or skill to enable you to make more money or be a better lover wouldn’t you use it? Wouldn’t you consider Viagra, Cialis & Livetra performance enhancing drugs? What if you had a secret weapon of War that you could use to defeat your enemies, wouldn’t you use it or would this be cheating?

It depends on how secret this weapon was, and the repercussions of being caught. I don't like Barry Bonds, and I think he did use performance enhancers, but I also give him credit for this record. You want to know why? Check out the dimensions of AT&T Park (formerly Pac Bell Park) where the Giants play. Notice where his record breaking home run landed. That ball would have been more than half way up the right-center bleachers in Yankee Stadium. In keeping with that comparison (because Yankee Stadium is a park all baseball fans are familiar with), the only place in right field that is a shorter distance from home in AT&T Park than in Yankee Stadium is right down the line, by a difference of 5 feet. Advantage Bonds, right? Nope, in AT&T Park the wall down the line is 25 feet high. In Yankee Stadium it's about 10 feet high.

Bonds may have cheated, but people discount what a huge disadvantage it is to be a left-handed hitter in AT&T Park.

Go gently with me here because I know nothing about baseball, but this story has even filtered over to our side of the pond. What drugs did he take and did they REALLY make a difference? After all you've still got to be able to hit a ball coming at you at 100mph. You could give me all the drugs in the world and I wouldn't be able to do it.

I don't think you can compare someone's wang to cheating in professional sports.

people who cheat should be busted hardcore. Baseball's steroid policy is about as weak as it gets!

I don't particularly like or dislike Barry Bonds. I am just glad he finally got the record so hopefully I can stop hearing so much about him. It's a shame if he used performance enhancing drugs, but will we ever know for sure? It seems hard to prove at this point.

Hard, did you see him in his high school days, even his college days. Heck even his early professional days

and you compare that to him now

Yes there is something abnormal with a spurt like that.

If your small most of your life, you don't get that big. And most baseball players don't focus on strength as much as they do technique and finesse.

    this stuff just doesn't happen.

It's not that he got big, it's when. Sure, getting big in your 20s is one thing. Getting bigger in your 40s is another.

But, I can't say that I care. The MLB did nothing, so there's no story.

I actually stopped watching MLB this season. I just got bored with the game and the same damn stories every single miserable day. Yawn.

I didn't even go to a game that I got good free tickets to. That's how bored I am with it. :)

Are you ready for some football? ;)

right, good point. he looked to be the type that no matter how much he could eat and workout he'd stay the same +/- 15lbs say.
I stopped watching like 5 years ago I think!

    Innocent until proven guilty.

Call me a delusional Giants fan, I don't care. The MLB steroid policy is NOT a joke any more, and he hasn't gotten caught. He is the same size he was a few years ago, and he obviously is clean now.. That means he could do it legitimately.

Look at Roger Clemens. The dude is just as old as Barry, and he is doing just as well, if not better.

Until Mitchell or someone else proves him guilty, why should I condemn one of my favorite sports players?

There are perfectly reasonable causes for his success in late years, people just like to "go with the flow" and assume he is guilty because they are ignorant, don't know the facts, and generally don't feel like taking the 5 seconds to rationally think over the situation.

Not being an American, I do not know how to react to these stories. I was never really a great fan of Bonds or his hitting exploits. For some reason, I prefered Mark Mcgwire. (from the Cardinals, is it? ) How many home runs did he finish with?
