Hey there, I was just wondering, if you wanted to get a site shutdown that links to warez, where would one go? Even better, if I found out that this website was being hosted on a "major player" (ie LayeredTech) , who would I email? Would it be enough with an email to abuse [at] layeredtech . com ? Any advice would be appreciated. By the way, the website I'm talking about is CLEARLY promoting downloads of INTERNATIONALLY copyrighted movies.
Well first complain to the webhost... most webhosts will suspend warez sites immediately. You could also find the owners of the copyrighted material and make them aware their rights are being violated, and they will send a DMCA to them, and if they servers are in america, legal action will be taken.
Email the webhosting company is the normal route however, if you do a search for warez and see how many million hits you get it really does feel that the copyright owners have conceeded that it is an unwinable battle.
One option would be to contact some media companies and let them know that a major web hosting company is hosting an illegal site. That might just get more traffic to warez site though... -- Nathan Enns
Thanks for all your thoughts, and, I did email the hosting company, and apparently (a friend told me) some links were removed, but, I don't think the all the links have been removed (in the members section), I can't check the site myself as it won't load any further than the front page (I doubt that it's being shut down though), so, just for the sake of it, I reported the website to VBulletin as well, thinking that, as it's a warez site, it might have a fake license, we'll see. Thanks again!
Adult Inustry - Legal Advice Some companies will do something about it because they also know this puts them at risk for more attacks / spamming / phishing
It'll depend on certain laws. Oftentimes, to my understanding, it's okay to link to it as long as it's not hosted on your site.
Did that, the sites still up, but some of the links are gone, however, the site is now slow as hell. But according to the whois, it's still hosted on the same server as before.
Domain Tools will tell you the name servers/ Or you can ping the URL and use ARIN or another registry to see who the upstream provider might be. Webhosting.info also might be a good site to use
I just used whois.sc and who.is and I clicked on the IP that was being shown when I "whois'ed" the website.
If they are on a dedicated private server which is not located in Us or in countries which doesnt have anylaws concerning this , then the site will stay ..
