Who's your target audience?

Based on the obvious fact there aren't many directories with that many links in who exactly is your target audience in both the short term and long term? Do you make your directory specifically for other directory owners and SEO companies to submit to simply because it has high PR or do you look at the long term and work on presenting your information for the end user who might not give a squat about PR but just want a site link and description as in dmoz?

My general directories are catering for people that treat it as a science and also for the average (if that exists) submitter.

I think its important to have a diverse approach and promote a directory that can accomodate various needs and to make submitters feel welcome and not create an unfriendly and out of reach environment.

Different factors come into account if its a niche directory of course, but regarding my own general directories i feel i need to accomodate a good variety of users, both now and in the future.

My goal with Massive Links has always been to cater to two groups of people, webmasters who want traffic and exposure for their site and people who are looking for information. I've taken the Yellow Pages as my example in building my directory because they accomplish this very well. There are people looking for services, advertisers looking to get business and Yellow Pages being the middle man.

Crikey a long answer from you for a change, Kudos to the Wind Rider.

@pipes; nice answer and probably why you'll stand the test of time when most others will drift away like a turd in the sewer.

@chabbs; nice site, and good thinking but what would help you follow the yellow pages model is using the correct script type, (unashamed plug for phpLynx there). Combine that with what you already have and I think with the positive attitude you have you'll succeed at it.

A general directory with enough categories can target any audience... We should try and build a resource along with a money making machine ;)

I prefer to be blunt and to the point, rather than ramble and rant books of posts, like some people do
