It's a very, very active community and security is a very high concern. I'm not sure how it compares to other CMS's, but I'd say it's quite good.

Many folks use it for their ecommerce solution. Make sure you follow all the suggestions for making it secure.

Go to Joomla.com and then the Extensions list at the top.

Under Content and News (lower left) there are 47 extensions listed for News. I've never tried any of them.

Some are commercial license, but most are not.

Make sure you're relatively happy with the site, as when you change out extensions you may very well change the URL and end up with a lot of broken pages in Google's index.

the core of joomla is completely secure - it's what you start adding on third party products that things can get problematic, especially if you don't regularly update.

There are some great Joomla templates out there - there is a great news-based template out there somewhere. I tried to find it but couldn't.

It's well worth investing in iJoomla New Portal if you are going for a news site.

If I was about to build a Joomla site now I'd wait until 1.5 is released - it's currently at Release Candidate State One.

It's going to be a big jump and I'm not sure how this will effect some seo aspects of the site like the url address.

They are bringing in sef url's as a part of the core - as you know, you have to have a third party extension for that at the moment.

I haven't looked at 1.5 at all so I have no idea how this will work in practice and how the change over will effect urls...

I don't think they have given a date - but personally I would wait until 1.5 is out before setting off on a new joomla voyage. It's currently at RC1 stage, so probably RC2 and then final version.

Just in regards to security and Joomla it is worth looking at this page for security vulnerabilities for some components:

    http://help.joomla.org/component/option,com_easyfaq/task,view/id,186/Itemid,268/

I had an email today from jomsecurity regarding the following components:

    - DocMAN v1.3 RC2 - No solution available yet
    - iJoomla Magazine - Latest Version Vulnerable! - New version to be
    released later today
    - Slideshow v0.2.2 - Latest version from http://www.bpixel.com is
    v2.0.2
    and is ok
    - SchoolInfo for CB - v1.0 RC 2 - No Solution available yet

While other components found this week alone with security problems are:

    - SimpleFAQ
    - JoomMap
    - GMaps v1.00
    - BibTeX v1.3
    - EventList v0.8
    - NiceTalk v0.9.3
    - RSFiles v1.0.2
    - Remository
    - NeoRecruit v1.4

The lesson: check for updates weekly!!

joomla is the most secured cms that i know.

just one tip for joomla secure: if you are not going to change joomla configuration.php, make chmod 644 for it.

I agree joomla is secured but theres lot of hackers is always try hacked joomla site, and joomla.org the home of joomla also has been hacked, you can read here http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,203000.0/topicseen.html and http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,203076.0.html

So I think, no one is safe from hackers
