Since Google is coming down heavily on paid links as it included a feature in the webmaster central to report paid link; what would be the result/effect of these paid directory links on SEO? Should i go for high quality relevant paid link or need to rely on Free links?

in my opinion, buying links from directories is a part of the seo game. i dont think that it will decrease your serp
hi, i think both free links and paid links both are important on there place. you should do three way link exchange also. but in paid link one thing is good you getting a link on high pr for a year or life time but in free links it is not possible.
The only trick is when buying links makes sure google cant find it. So a site that you buy links off must - not promote the practice anywhere on their site - not include there URL if they advertise selling links - should deal in pms and emails - I think you should stay away from sponsored links and the like its too obvious its a paid link Google uses its algorythm to rank sites and IMO as long as googles bots cant tell that a lnk is purchased, buying links remains a viable way of getting some linkjuice from sites that you would otherwise not be able to.
