Weapons given to Iraq are missing

The Pentagon has lost track of about 190,000 AK-47 assault rifles and pistols given to Iraqi security forces in 2004 and 2005, according to a new government report, raising fears that some of those weapons have fallen into the hands of insurgents fighting U.S. forces in Iraq.

The report from the Government Accountability Office indicates that U.S. military officials do not know what happened to 30 percent of the weapons the United States distributed to Iraqi forces from 2004 through early this year as part of an effort to train and equip the troops. The highest previous estimate of unaccounted-for weapons was 14,000, in a report issued last year by the inspector general for Iraq reconstruction.

    ............................

The GAO reached the estimate of 190,000 missing arms -- 110,000 AK-47s and 80,000 pistols -- by comparing the property records of the Multi-National Security Transition Command for Iraq against records Petraeus maintained of the arms and equipment he had ordered. Petraeus's figures were compared with classified data and other records to ensure that it was accurate enough to compare against the property books.

In all cases, the gaps between the two records were enormous. Petraeus reported that about 185,000 AK-47 rifles, 170,000 pistols, 215,000 pieces of body armor and 140,000 helmets were issued to Iraqi security forces from June 2004 through September 2005. But the property books contained records for 75,000 AK-47 rifles, 90,000 pistols, 80,000 pieces of body armor and 25,000 helmets.

It makes you wonder how much money the arm dealers friends of this administration are going to make on the "missing" arms and how many warlords and regional blood bath will be supplied by those weapons?

Why would American Government or American Company sell well known Russian AK-47 to Iraqis? Unless some kind of war profiteers making a killing on the deal. If you are a TRUE American, then you sell Made In America Guns.

This is a remarkable turn around for you gworld. When it was reported and proven that Iran was supplying your buds in Iraq with sniper rifles, you tried to defend Iran from such.

Considering how new the formed military is, I'd not be surprised record keeping is a low priority for them. Considering that some have sold out to terrorist groups, not surprised there, either.

So really, even though your efforts to portray the US in a bad light (that is what you mission is here), truth be told, it actually benefits those you support! What a happy day for you!

    And that is really bothersome.
AK-47 is old, but still a deadly assault rifle, terrorists getting their hands on those little killers is a nightmare..

Wow, that is quite alot of guns but its not as big a deal as one would think, its bad but not "that" bad. Any terrorist group could very easily get that many guns for a few million, when I went to vietnam I could have bought an ak-47 for $100 of course I didnt because I like my M4.

Its the 120,000 pieces of missing body armor that is the real problem, terrorist already have guns but not to many have armor.

Is the U.S. military going to start bombing the U.S. government for supplying weapons to enemies of the United States?

    Good question. A different observation:

Is the U.S. military going to start bombing the Iraqi government for supplying weapons to the enemies of the their country?

If I read the report correctly, we provided in good faith, weapons to the Iraqi military to help them fight those who wish to harm the country. I don't recall reading that the US directly or knowingly supplied such to enemies.

Thousands of Iraqi men have died fighting for and protecting their country. Could it not be possible, that terrorists killed Iraqi soldiers and took their weapons? Could it not be possible that convoys were Iraqi solders were transporting their weapons, were blown up and weapons stolen?

Ak47's are cheaper than bottled water in Iraq. Everyone has 4 of them at least.

Iraqi's are only allowed to own 1 Avtomat Kalashnikova (usually the 1947, 1974; not sure if the M model is legal) and only 1 magazine.

i find it strange that the USA would supply a more powerful gun to them than their own troops have to shoot back with.

Sure, it's possible. Anything is possible. Just like it's possible they carried the weapons to the insurgent meeting, laughing at us all the way.

In my opinion, this shows how little time you've spent in that country and interacting with those people...

So you are suggesting that what I presented could never happen, based upon your opinion?

kaethy - thanks, but I already know where you stand. I haven't forgot some of your previous posts here. Perhaps you thought I had?

I believe it is. He was being too open in the past about his fascination with boys and balls, so now he's letting the world know he likes middle school cheerleaders too.

I don't know what it is with him and little kids, but it creeps me out.
