I saw this on Digg this morning, http://www.digg.com/programming/Wha...rs_How_About_Scrollovers_Download_This_Script It seems like a pretty cool way of drawing attention to links on your page such as affiliate links. Has anyone see anything like this before?
That is exceptionally naff In my opinion it doesnt draw any more attention at all to the link. People looking at the page still simply see text that is a different colour to the rest of the page and putting their mouse over it will still just see a change in look - the only difference is a small animation with a risk of having compatibility issues with some browsers. Will it get more clicks? I would imagine that it will get a tiny increase not because it draws more attention to the link but simply because a certain market segement will think it is "kewl" and will want to see what the link goes to/ what happens when you click on it. If you are talking about PPC advertising then fair enough but if it is sharing on sales etc I think you would simply see the conversion rate drop (but not the actual volume of sales)
And they're using javascript to do it. Can't it also be done in CSS? I don't have anything against js (except that I can't write it) but why add more scripts if you can get the same thing without?
Its one of those things that looks cool the first couple times you see it but after that it's kinda blah.
Well, it's new because I have never seen it before, but not something I would ever implement in any of my websites.
Although for some reason virtualstapler never bores me... but I guess I'm easily amused... (yeah a script running makes the staplers staple and make a cute sound when you mouse over... great for when I'mk stressed and thinking out a problem... sorta like popping bubble wrap...)
I was just finding it funny the example is broken on my machine in every browser except FF... That's what happens when you use % sized fonts inside a px width container.
it isn't that bad. i've seen flash sites using those kind of effects on their navigation. i was just amazed when i saw this thread and realized that it can be done using CSS and Javascript.
Its cute, If used properly. but people will overdo it and use it on every single link on their page. once it goes into myspace its all over its not 2.0 for sure. just a clever little thing
