I'm looking to start up a directory, and was wondering what software you people use? I'd like something free, but it doesn't necessarily have to be. Also, how successful have your directory sites been?

Is the free version any good? Or should I just shell out the 25 dollars?

Thanks for the responses. Very helpful :)

Is it possible to have decent success with Adsense for directory sites? Or is paid links the only way to go? For some reason I think Adsense wouldn't work too well for directory sites but I'm probably wrong.

No, adsense will never work on a directory unless its a very very high traffic directory. ;)

My personal favorite is IndexU from NiceCoders.com ( their having some problems with their server at the moment so be patient and they will be back soon ).

They have a 'lite' version thats free for you to try and a paid version. Very reasonably priced.

Adsense works, but not in the sense that it can be your full time income from it. You'll need to add additional revenue making ways if your looking for full time income.

Is that a wink of sarcasm? I hope so.

Well I definately don't intend to make a full time income off this. Just some extra spending money would be nice.
