Free backlink services - are they any good?

I'm trying to build some backlinks and I made an account on freelinksdirect.com. What they do is give you a code with links that you put on your site, then they put links to you on other sites. Has anyone had any success with sites like these? Thanks in advanced.

It shouldn't hurt your website by doing it, but it won't necessarily make you a fast success either. I'd say go for as many of those as you can; the more the better.

Are the links you are putting on your site and linking with similar in topic?
If not it might not be very effective. It will get you more back links but if you want a good SERP postion then you need to be linking with quality sites have the same topic as your site.

i think it's automatic link building service.

you may get problems while you are using it. google does not like automatic link building services

I think you are better doing it yourself. Look for related niche sites and try to get links to those sites. Most people who use those type of link sites are just starting out so you are just getting possible links on new sites. Besides that, if Google decides it is no good, all links related to that site will be no good. I say stick to good old fashion link building with a little of your own work. The easy way is not always the best way.

Google does not like manipulation of links , in the long run it would be dangerous.

I prefer to build my own links, that way I know what is really happening and I can ensure im doing it the way I see fit and not going off in some direction that dont matter. My 2 cents ;)

basically back links are used to get more traffic to your site by direct clicks or by pointing search engines' spiders to your website. with direct clicks there's no problems even if there is not much benefits for that. The real problem with automated link exchanges that search engines seem to be uncomfortable with them, try to follow these tips if you want some good back links:
    - During a link exchange, never accept all links. Search engines slowly reach improved keyword importance but it takes time. It may be possible to sort out crucial and irrelevant partners-sites on keyword base.
    - If the exchange will benefit your site and provide good information in the future it is probably beneficial.
    - As long as your link exchange plan is good, you will be successful. You may not jump in ranking quickly but after a few months you will notice an improvement in your standing on the search engine.
    - For exchange links and building business contacts find great niches or areas of interest. Remember that growth is good.
    - A web site can be de-indexed by search engines for inappropriate behavior such as stacking the site or loading the search words.
    - Getting thousands of respected business partners every day is not natural for any online businesses. Search engines are leery of suspicious links that increase too quickly and violate reasonable limits. Remember that value and quality are more important than volume of links.
    - Make sure you anchor your URL. Find a proper keyword that exemplifies your niche and use it as the anchor so search engines target those people checking this link.
