.............Russia says its expanded claim is justified because the Arctic seabed and Siberia are linked by one continental shelf...........

What if the Russians are right by law?

If US had the right to claim it, don't you think they wouldn't do it?

I bet because the law won't fit Canada, and the others (Norway, the United States and Denmark) they will flatly reject it, or twist it to their likes.

If Russians prove that Arctic is "attached" to their land then UN have to recognize it !
Russia will put this in front of UN in 2009 when research is done ....

So let's just wait till then !

Russia did not annex anything .... we will have to wait till 2009 when Russia will present its case in front of UN comission !
It is interesting how everybody jumps up when Russia is doing it legal way through UN while some other big powers like to get "around" and think they are democratic and good. They kind of think the world cannot survive without them ;)

While it seems clear to me that we own it, as long as Russia goes through the right channels (as they are) then the final decision will be amicable.

Peter Mackay is a great guy but he's a dick as a politician. Not sure how familiar you guys are with Canadian political drama, but he was sleeping with a fellow Conservative (Belinda Stronach) before she left him and crossed the floor to the Liberal party. Mackay proceeded to call her a "dog" in during a session in the House :)

Yup, she's no dog, that's for sure. Here's how it happened though:

They were a couple, appeared together in public, etc. Both were esteemed members of the Conserative party. Then one day during a session she "crossed the floor" - moved officially from the Conservative to the Liberal party. He said later that he woke up with her that morning and had no idea. She refused to speak to him after the move, so it was quite a shock to him :D

She's a good woman though, and a strong politician. She was just diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery, left politics, and hinted at a return to a potentially higher post. Quite the lady! :)
