Last night my granddaughter looked up "barbie" on google and was completely dismayed when she clicked through several porn links (even with the safe search on) so I was wondering if there were any QUALITY search engines out there specifically for kids.
I think Yahooligan's (run by Yahoo) is the best you're going to get. http://kids.yahoo.com/ Would be nice for a google kids though.
yeah, I tried to google for google kids and the best I came up with was their DMOZ clone....which I fear has pedophile sites listed as it's not been updated in two years. I'll need to check that out, thanks for sharing!
http://www.askforkids.com/ and http://www.kidsclick.org/ They're not as comprehensive as Yahooligans, but they're worth the try.
My granddaughter still got porn (or close enough to porn for an 8 year old) with the google safety filter on. It was from Youtube (and was reported) but it was still porn, from google. So I'm looking for safer alternatives...
By law, anything under kids.us has to be porn free. So, you are safe to limit your kids search under http://www.kids.us/
Thing is, how would a KIDS one be any different to any search engine that has a filter on it? Google has an option called "MODERATE Safe Search" on by default and then "STRICT safe search" which is the very safest and most restricitive one...I guess it just filters out words that sound "porn like" etc...So, it does exactly what any kids search engine would be designed to do anyway...
The .kids.us has very strict policies regarding links. It's like a fenced neighborhood where only .kids.us sites can link to each other. Content is monitored.
I don't know, but there has to be a better way. Especially when you search for "barbie video" and the very first link has girls in their twenties feeling themselves up. I'll need to check that site out...
This should be illegal the world over. Everyone knows that Barbie is a kids doll and any website using as porn related should be removed from WWW with immediate effect.
If one there weren't so many people unfortunate to be born with the name Barbie... And by your argument, everybody knows about Windows so there shouldn't be any shops that sell windows (as in physical, with glass and so on) on the Internet. Sorry, just because it's a popular brand, it doesn't mean we need to impose things. My question to the thread started is... did you bother to at least install some filtering solution that would block porn sites? There's tons of solutions, NetNanny, CyberSitter etc... Set Google to strict filtering, install some monitoring software, look from time to time at what your kids are doing on the computer and, if they're confused by what they find, try doing some sexual education and explain what's that and so on, at 8 years old or whatever age they're at, they're old enough to understand some things.
The Barbie twins are FAR from dolls No, because we didn't need to. We have raised the child to know what is good and bad and what to and not to do. The trouble is... Google was set to strict filtering, but seemingly they do not mind such things if they are coming from google affiliate sites. Barbie Video should not have two girls in their twenties feeling themselves up as the FIRST position in the SERP. And as for teaching her the birds and the bees that has already been done, but that does not mean I want her stumbling across it via some self promoting search engine.
well i searched in google for the keyword "barbie" and there isnt one porn site on the first 10 pages. http://www.askforkids.com http://kids.yahoo.com http://www.kidsites.org
Isn't there an option where you can block all Google adult sites and then parent software is a charm it's a shame I know Google has way to many adult links you enter something random and get something rather shocking that is not related to it with google lol.
