Custom Directory Categories

Just curious how many of you came up with your own "Custom Categories" for your web directory - it seems everyone is using the same general category dump theses days - I would love to come up with an original one - but get to thinking about it and the research on keywords - meta information for each word etc.. seems a bit overwhelming of a project - What are your thoughts?

    Thank You.

All my directories use "Custom Categories"!

For sure its was really a tough task to create your own category structure.

Category dumps make you look lazy, unprofessional. Who wants to submit to a site that cant be bothered.

What is the best way to lay out a new category structure? Spreadsheet? I guess I need to look at it in smaller pieces than the whole - it just seems like an overwhelming project.

How do you get your ideas to go on another path less followed the naming conventions?

Best Web Directory have its own unique structure.

I did used references from other directories when I was building it up but at the end, I made it the way I think its better for user to browse a link (and also submit ;) )

I still have 12 pages long word file when I initially created that structure. :)

I spent time looking at other dirs structure, and how many posts there where in each category. Even some of the best and well known had too many listings in some categories.
I then made my own structure using this data. It took me many hours. Using a spreadsheet helps a lot.
