A question related to Directories and SSL Certificates

Im looking around at various things that can be added to a directory for security and customer confidence.

Ive just been reading about SSL Certificates but i wont pretend to fully understand them so i have a few questions and hope that anyone who understands SSL can explain to me.

I know that 90% or more of paid directory submissions will be through paypal and i know that goes to a secure page when signing into paypal but would a directory benefit anymore from having a SSL Certificate or does it not come into play the way our directories are setup? i know their used on shopping sites.

So basically would it be pointless or does it make sense to do this?

Payment/credit card/financial info is never sent over the directories server, its done using paypal.

The only data transmitted over directories server is info about listings.

Does anyone really care if a hacker reads the anchor text, url and description of a site they are submitting? I think not.

Therefore i see no need for SSL certificates.

Thanks mikey, i wanted to fully understand this, as you say, there is no need for this, and the usual submission details are not requiring that type of protection.

thanks for clearing this up for me.:)

SSL certificates are good if you have your own merchant account or shopping cart other then that paypal provides the security

If you were going to have a payment processer yourself, you would obviously need SSL.

I think you dont need it tho, nobody wants to start typing in CC details when they can just click a few buttons using paypal....

Good point, paypal seems to keep the actions to a minimum.

I am glad you brought that up.

Few days ago, I was reading an article about directories were there was some discussion about "being professional" (Sorry I forgot the link )

So, i went ahead and collected some info regarding SSL and their prices.

You are right that all payment stuff is handled at PP or may be 2CO end so we actually don't need SSL as no directory is collection CC# but still do you think having SSL gives any value to your directory?? (I will like to see a bit more discussion on that)

The article I am talking about was discussing about "Being Professional" and giving submitter "Peace of mind".

So, if you consider yourself as "Submitter" and came across a directory operating under "https://" with an Image "secured by xxxx", what will be your thoughts?

As a submitter on a standard directory, I don't think the type of data submitted requires encryption. I use an SSL on one of my ecommerce sites and the certificate only kicks in when the user is registering on the site or logging into their account. Personal data is required here (telephone/address etc.) & that's what needs to be encrypted for peace of mind.

    Hi Fastian

For me personally looking at it as a submitter, it is things like this that would give me that peace of mind feeling when a directory has gone to lengths to promote a secure and professional environment.

Although maybe not all could be relevant, things like:

    SSL (where neccessary)
    Verified Domains
Additional Pages like: About Us, FAQ's, Privacy and Refund etc
And other genuine Certificates, Verifications etc could maybe help add to what is already becomming a great business.

So as a submitter for me personally id be pleased at seeing these things or similar.
