How Important Is It To Have An "About" Page?

    Hi,

Do you think having a detailed "about" page is important and can help with your directory?

Is it more important with a niche directory vs. a general directory?

I don't see many directories having a full on "about" page and was wondering what your thoughts are on this?

If you have an about page you would like to share, please post it.

I will be working on one this week for when I get my new custom template made. (Thinking of putting a picture up too).

    Thanks!

    I have one...
I feel it gives submitters a bit of background about a directory and maybe what to expect regarding the directory...

HA, that's funny, cause while I was writing this post I was trying to think which directories I came across with an about page, and the one that came to my mind was "snoop".

One of the reasons I bought 2 links on your site was that I felt confident in your directory after reading your about page.

    Thanks.

Look at it this way, if you like to see an about page when you visit a site, then you should definitely have it there.

Personally, I do look at about pages, especially on blogs.

Trust in directories is declining among webmasters, so anything you can do to make it more trust-worthy is a positive. I think an About page can really help offer a basic level of trust on almost any site. I would be more apt to buy links from a directory with an about page, and the more detailed the better.

I think its fairly important to add a few additional pages other than the ones usually found at a directory.

On one of my directories i have added an "About Us" page, it has a very minimal amount of info at the moment but i plan to write an extra paragraph or so fairly soon.

I have also added a "Privacy and Refund" page so that the submitter can find out anything that they need to understand before submitting.

I also plan to add a few other things in time to induce a feeling of genuine security and to show that the owner and directory that they are considering using are open and honest and are who they say they are.

    Transparency is the Key. ;)

Most of that can be obtained by whois... Who is to say it is even real... So why would that give you confidence in the about page?

I have one about page here, not old though.
And i think it is helpful for a submitter in showing what he can get from the directory, and how well the directory is progressing... :)

Good idea in making a custom about page ;)

I have a short one; am adding more to it later...

But my favorite is snoop's... I like his "snoop was kidnapped" page :)

I don't think a back story is needed, but it definitely adds something

I have a privacy policy page but not an about page. I will create one asap. I should also put my photo and phone number, and maybe some lady webmasters call me. :) That would be a very interesting advantage of having a link directory and about page. :)

a phone number on your about page is a factor of a better quality business. Not everyone knows about whois and how to use it. Personally, i never whois anything because it takes time which i rarely have.

aspidov... If I worked from an office I would have a phone # there. But why would anyone want to be bothered at home at 3 am because someone half way around the world wants to ask a question about submissions? :D

If a person cant shoot me an email, I don't want their submission...

Never ever thought about having an about page on our directory.

Always thought a directory that is straight to the point in what it has to offer spells everything out what the directory is about without having to have an about page.

This is one for future consideration though!

thats why real business uses a real business phone only for business, and if anyone serious calls, they can leave a voicemail.

Sometime, it's important for new comers to know you, especially your website is quite different from others. And you may tell them something interesting in the 'about' page
