Good puzzle. I'm struggling unless it's some sort of optical illusion with the grid lines - do they converge towards the top?

Yes, it's an illusion. I guess the squares in the grid become larger at the bottom so the shapes are basically a lot different in size. Going to check with my ruler later :D

The red and green triangles are not similar.

The red triangle has perpendicular sides of 3 and 8.

The green triangle has perpendicular sides of 2 and 5.

Both has different angle measurements. The diagram itself is incorrect.

The combined figure will not be a triangle but a polygon with four sides.
That's why the extra square is visible in the second figure.

    Sachin is right.
For the figure to be true, angle 1 and angle 2 must be equal. (see the figure below).

And both the angles will be equal iff

    3/8 = 2/5 which is not true.

So I think the figure is wrong.

i dont understand math by numbers..

what i do understand is laymens language....lol

after much engrossing myself into thinking more and more..i noticed this..and this is a lot easier to understand..the Angles of the triangle Green and Red are not the same in both the pictures..they are actually more elongated

It is an optical illusion then - the 'point' angle in the red triangle is 20.56 degrees, whereas in the green triangle it's 21.80 degrees - a very subtle difference barely noticeable to the eye.

Everyone is focusing on the wrong thing, I think, aren't they? The angle is slightly different in those triangles - more perceivable in the smaller image, than the large one, but who cares?

Its just a game of tetris. The pieces are just arranged different, so there is now a gap in there.

    Exactly.

I just made a rough diagram for it.

The two angles A and B are unequal and thus the figures are not triangles but four sided polygons.

I deliberately exaggerated the angles in the figures, to make difference more clear.
