If you get ranked with your site in SEs, then you can attract people with your traffic. That is a good advertising tool to sell ads on your site. Also, you can consider to offer a paid ad with low prices first.
I agree with most here - directories (strong directories) will improve your SERPS greatly which in turn will bring you more organic traffic. That's why I use submit to directories at least. All though a lot of directories work really hard to drive traffic to your review it's just hard to do. I don't think it's very often that a directory visitor clicks on a review and comes back to check out another review. Unless you are on the front page of the big bidding directories you won't see a ton of traffic.
I see the same and sometimes it amounts to announcing the new directory here @DP and then submitting to all of the free directories launched every month. With such a limited scope, you'd be lucky to see any traffic at all if your site is unrelated to webmasters.
I can't imagine someone going to a directory to find a site, when they can just Google for it. However, I've searched for sites before and a page in a directory was actually ranked higher than the actual site was.
You can find list of strongest bidding directories over here: http://www.ventedoy.com/strongest-list/ As you can see the strongest one is http://www.bigweblinks.com/ and minimum amount to get listed is $49.90. However to be on homepage, you have to shell out $1350 or above... For rest, you can even find minimum amount to be $1, but to be listed on homepage varies based on bidding..
