Hi, i run a forum and have run many others in the past.

The forum software you choose is completly up to you, however i prefer lightweight solutions, that are very easy to modify.

Which is why i go with:

    www.punbb.org
    Code (markup):
However, it is VERY lightweight, and although it does have modifications some of the more popular ones such as PMs will require you to manually alter code, however full instruction is given.

    Its your choice.

    phpBB - free
    IPB - free (old version)
    vBulletin - my personal fav

I love vb. Used by many, easy to use, good mods/skins, etc.

I've had great success with www.webwizguide.com. They have an ASP based forum that is available for free (if you don't mind their banner ads).

If you have long term, and commercial expectations, you should use vBulletin.
    I use vBulletin.
I heard good things about Invision Power Board.

If you want an easy to use Admin Panel go with IPB if not go vB, if you don't want to pay for it then go SMF or phpBB.

The best forum software I think is vbulletin. Many of the larger forums use it. If you have 600 users then you can use a few megs of bandwidth, but then again you can use a good few hundred gigs per month of bandwidth. It's not about how many members you have, but how active your forum is if guests and members visiting it and doing posts. In other words, you could have 600 inactive members which will not post at all.

Ive heard enough good things about vbulletin and it seems to work fine here.. it is $160. which is not a big problem.. but if something free will do just as well, then i want to know.. Im expecting about 600 users at first hopefully active. How much bandwidth can i expect???? a few hundred gigs a month? just posts by 600 active users? wow.. and i would want growth.. yikes..

    I strongly suggest vbulletin ;)

bandwidth depends on how many users online at once and how many images you have.
You shouldn't use more then 20 gig a month with only 600 users.. IMO

I use SMF it's free and I have over 1000 users with about 250 uniques a day and I've only used a little over 3 gigs of bandwidth this month that's including another one of my sites.

It won't be more than 40-50 GB. I have a vbulletin forum which gets around 300 uniques a day. It is pretty new and not much content yet.

Currently it is consuming less than 5 GB a month. (I don't have any images. All images are hosted on image hosting sites).
