    Useful Article, you point some interesting issues. I would also add 'Quality of Design' and brand awareness (have you heard or seen them before?)...

    I agree, it is a flawed tool and works maybe 10% of the time and now it is a paid tool so it is not widely used.

    - also this one is a bit of a double edged-sword. It is nice to be on the front page of a category with only a handful of other sites sometimes.

    - There are lots of other keywords that are good for a directory to rank for so I am not sure this one makes sense.

    Thats a nice article..

    Also check for Google backlinks and confirm that atleast few category pages have some PR ( to rule out dropped domain)
