    If you plan on succeeding:
    Long-term a forum community is better than a blog.

    ~~~~~
    The only catch is most forums never catch on big time.
    I think he nailed it ^^
    Blogs are easier to monetize...really, both short and long-term...but if you can get a forum going and keep it going with a good userbase and steady stream of posts, it can very easily outperform a blog. Forums take a lot of work (compared to blogs)
    The average blog probably has a higher ROI than the average forum
    It depends really on how you monetize them and how much work you put into them.
    Forums are only good for people who can dellligate things to moderators. I hate dealing with spammers and users who screw around all the time. Plus from my experience, I get a lower CTR with forums than I do with Blogs.
    Blogs are better, forums you spend a lot of time moderating them
    I can see how time-intensive a forum would be.... but also, with the right volunteer moderators, could be great.
    It depends on your social connections. Can you find free labor?
    Depends on the time and effort you are going to invest. Blogs are generally easier to make money off though.
    It's the content, not which platform, which is important.
    forums are definately expensive to manage, promote and get going. lot of work as most here talked about, blogs is much easy and fast for sure, if you are not ready to spend time on your forum then its best to go for blogs, forums can die if not maintained, but blogs remain alive with just one good post a day.
    Why do forums make you sick??? Care to elaborate???
    The problem with blogs is that you have to write a lot to create some buzz and get some traffic. Whereas, with forums, it is community driven and you can just sit back and moderate.
    So as far as the amount of work that is needed, I think it comes out to pretty even.
    Yeah, once you can get a forum to that point (where you can count on your members creating all of the content), they probably require the same amount of work as your own blog...but the trick is getting a forum to the point that you don't have to do much of the posting yourself - your members do it.
    I'd say that 95% of forums never make it that far...and that's what makes it so hard to run a successful forum.
    It also depends on what forum system you are using (ie. Invision Power Board, vBulletin, etc). Some have mods to add the ads after the first post which would make the ads more popular and easier to get more revenue.
