-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I wish to build a website to go along with my commitment to help people in need. I'll start with my resume. I have 30 years of carpentry and construction plus electrical and plumbing. I have also learned CSS and html. I would like some advice on how to "word" the website that I will build that will be friendly to anyone in my area that may need to ask for help in times of need. The site will be local only. 50km max. I am going to ask local contractors for help and retailers for support. I will also ask the local newspaper for free ads. I will advertise their support on my site. My domain name is http://www.helpfulhands.ca . I would welcome any thoughts on this good deed. Thanks Barry. I would also like write about the each day at the end of the day about the things that I have done. What would be the best way to do this. Word Press?
WP would be the cheapest way of course & it would allow you to be interactive with people who come to the site. Good luck with it Michelle
Wordpress is very easy to install and use so if your content will be more news geared instead of static content then it's the right platform to use. If you want to have different sections where you explain how people can get help e.g. in construction, plumbing etc then it might be best to go for another CMS which allows you that or even use static html pages. In any case you can have a blog to provide updates
to be honest I've never used wordpress or have any idea how to use it. A little bit of info on the way to go about it would be a big help. Thanks Barry
So I got wordpress going. Seems simple enough but one problem. On the page that shows the templates. Nothing, Some hard to decide on a template when I have to load each one up before I can see what it looks like. Can anyone help me out with this? Maybe suggest a good design suited to my cause. Thanks Barry
Hi Barry, Well I am personally still looking for a really good WP Expert b/c as with everything online, it's not as easy as people make it out to be unless you don't care about your biz First there's the loading of the software which I'm told is 1-2-3, then you have to choose a template from their numerous templates most of which are NOT biz looking & I haven't yet found a template designer. Then you have to tweak the setup to your liking, that means the top & right navs (that's the only layout I like), then you have to organize how your articles will look, THEN I just learned you should have a miriad of tools attached to it, like something that helps with SEO, one that organizes ALL of your blogs together, & a few others. I can't name these b/c I just got them a week or two ago & still haven't even started to understand them. Good luck with it Michelle
Thanks for the reply. I'm assuming that I can still use my www. for my main site. I must say that wordpress has it's faults but I just want to use it to post about my day and to thank peoplel who have helped me. I got this template up now and would like your thoughts about it. Helpful Hands
Looks good actually. You need to change the word Such to Search. (right nav). Also I think your font is different for each of those days, so you will want to keep it consistant. You seem like you are off to a great start I wish there were more people like you here in Toronto. All the best with it. Michelle
It seems like you have everything going but if you ever need help just pm me. I have worked a lot with wordpress. As a matter of fact I convert themes to wordpress so I know it's inner workings. So if you need any help, let me know.
