    You need links to your site. It helps rank and search engine listing. If site has some good links to it google list it faster and updates it faster.

    With backlinks you want to look at the quality of them more then the quantity of them. You can have thousands of backlinks, however if they are all from low PR sites or link spam networks they will not carry much weight. However if you have backlinks from more reputable sites and higher PR that looks better to google. The more high quality backlinks you have, the more often your site gets crawled, the higher your PR will get and chances are you will rank much higher for the keyword or keywords that got used in the anchor text for those backlinks. Currently backlinks are a very important part in your off page optimization.

    I wouldn't say 80%. It's not just the quantity of links you have, but the quality of them as well, and whether or not they're related to the page on your site they are linking to.
