Need some computer advice

I just added a 250GB external hard drive to my system and have my whole system backed up. A few people have suggested that I also move all my pictures (8GB) and all my music (17GB) to the external hard drive also, just to free up some space on my internal drive. Others have told me that's not such a good idea.

So what do the experts here suggest??

I'd keep the files on both, if you already backed up the entire system would it not of backed up those files as well?

Yeah, I have back ups of the music and pics on the external, but I'm thinking of moving the originals there as well, just to free up the 25GB that they are taking up on my computer. All the musics and pics are on my iPod as well, so my iPod is like a 3rd copy of all those files...

IMO if you have enough storage space I'd keep it on your computer as well.

That's my concern. I don't want to run out of that storage space. :( And won't my computer run faster (in theory) if I have more available space?

As long as your drive isn't almost full and you keep it defragged I doubt you'd trully see that much in performance differences. Especially for files such as this, a defrag can and will put those files into a rarely used section of the drive. Keeping files most often used in faster parts of the hard drive.

Hmmm... Defrag.... That might be a good idea. I don't think I have ever defraged this computer...
But the music is my most often used files! I never sit down at the computer without the iTunes running... And I have my treadmill in the same room, so the iTunes is running even when I'm not on the computer! ;)

Seriously?! That's a huge thing, all my systems use third party programs but are setup to defrag automatically.

Well, the computer is not very old (it's not even paid for yet!). How often do you defrag?
