Guessing this is a headline we'll never see in the US... scroll down for pic: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x1449555 These kinds of crazy photo ops upset me.. right next to kissing babies.
Quite the photo-op. I hope the American press treats it the same way. No matter how you feel about American politics, you have to admit that George W. Bush is easily the most unintelligent and lacking leader in history.
Times of India is an Anti-Bush newspaper.. They had a daily comic strip called Dubyaman, mocking fun on Bush.. Unfortunately, thats the newspaper I read everyday
A photo is a photo though, and Bush running alongside two men who lost their legs because of him is ironic and very telling of not only Bush's mentality, but he mentality of Americans in general (not all Americans obviously).
Great photo, I love the caption... I think he's so far from reality, that even running next to the one legged troops he doesn't understand it's his (and his administration's) fault... In the perfect world his daughter would be sent to iraq and lose a leg, then he would feel a small fraction of the pain this conflict has caused... EDIT just a note, I am anti-iraq-war, but pro-war-on-terror...
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/white_house/jan-june06/iraq_06-14.html It's amazing he has as much support as he does. I think I heard Jenna and Barbara were signing up to do their fair share of the sacrifice...oh wait, that must have been The Onion or something...
how many of them, who are luckily enough able to go home with only one leg? many of them return home with no legs, or even worst - does not return at all. is it worthed - for that kind of war?
You know, those of us who have never been directly involved will never know the true answer to that question as it's all relative.. some truly believe in what they are doing or have done and are happy to have contributed and made a sacrifice in the service of others or for their country.. I suppose in the thick of it, all it would take is the gratitude of the Iraqi public to make it worthwhile for some.
I agree that some believe this, but you should also take into account the fact that soldiers are not permitted to speak out against their commander in chief... They are also "prepped" for any interviews with the press beforehand... I believe if the US soldiers had the same freedom of speech that regular citizens have, we would hear a whole new side to the story... Honestly, I can't think of anyone I worked with that felt that way while we were overseas... Even if the Iraqis started treating our troops like heros, it wouldn't bring our fallen back...
This is the story of the amputee as it ran in the US: http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2006-06-27-bush-jog_x.htm Quite a different slant.
Kudos DGridley for showing both sides of the picture. While I liked the irony, humour, and wit of the first pic....I can appreciate the drive of the soldier; its astonishing....and it was appropriate for Bush to run w/ him and the other guy.
Yes, a Photo is a photo but the story behind the photo can be different. As I stated Times of India is an anti-republican news paper. So it takes everything against Bush as long as it possible.
Think of it this way: if you removed the story entirely and simply showed people the photo you'd have 90% of Americans saying Bush is great, reaching out to the soldiers, etc, and you'd have 95% of the rest of the world saying that he looks like a fool because he was obviously never in danger of losing a leg and simply ordered these young men to their own amputation. My percentages are off the top of my head, but it's true. Americans have a such an upholding idea of themselves that they are blinded to this. It gets to the point where many Americans are asking 'why does the world hate us so?'. Baffles me.
Well No, your Nos are wrong.. I don't believe that democrats will say Bush is great and certainly 90% of Americans arenot republican (even some of them wont say Bush is great). As far as being on the line of fire is concerned, Leave the president aside, tell me which top notch Army official was ever on the line of fire? In any war a front line soldier is always on the line of fire, and Iraq isn't an exception.
Agreed, and you're right about the percentages too - obviously there are many Bush naysayers in the States. Also true what you say about high ranking officials and war in general. The difference is that most world leaders and high hanking military officials know better then to go running with two one-legged men who lost those legs in such an unpopular war.
