I have been submitting to directories, but I have not got a single hit from them yet. I get good hits from search engines, classifieds, forums and more but not one from the directories. Is directory submission just for page rank?

That's why I don't put a lot of money into directory submissions. :)

When you submit to directories - you are doing SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION with relevant anchor texts.
This helps you in ranking better on search engines for particular keywords - called better SERPs.. -- > The way to traffic.
So directories are indirect way to get huge traffic ;)

Also, buy top bids on bidding web directories like bigweblinks.com , webdirectorybid.com , etc.

I never receive any traffic from directories. I get some good back links which helps in PR and a helps little in SERP but I have not seen any help in traffic.

I submit to directories soley for search engines. I dont ever expect i woudl get a real human visitor from them, unless I am lucky enough to get on dmoz sometime in the next 5 years.

We have a little over 1,100 members in our directory. I track every outbound click in a table (which is now massive). Every day I generate 1,100 graphs (one per member) to show how many clicks they received from us. We email links to the members, but I usually sample a bunch myself out of interest.

I'd say 60% of the sites get very little volume. The other 40% get some nice bumps from us. So - It really depends is the answer. If your site is interesting to the readers at the directory, and well positioned, then probably yes. If not, then no.

web directories are for backlinks, content and for help in the SEs

bidding directories will bring you traffic, so submit there if thats what you want.

Unless you on the top 50 directories on their homepages or on immediate 1st page of the category I wouldn't be submitting for traffic but for backlinks and pagerank.

Are you talking about actual visitors as traffic or just webmasters trying to submit their site as traffic? How to differentiate ?

Remember directories main goal is not to offer traffic, but pr juice to be frank.

Directory submissions will help your SERPs. So they will help you get indirect traffic.
They help your PR and SERPs. Not direct traffic that much.
Also keep in mind that even the small traffic directories may send you is highly targeted.

And the search engines browse the directories, in turn see that your site is relevant to a certain topic or subject.

They are also for search results.

I have my ecommerce site submited into Aviva, and I am getting traffic from the same. Directories are definately providing traffic to site directory or indirect way.

I get very few uniques per day from directories. I typically brush off the few that I do get as other webmasters / SEOs following my tracks while doing competitive link analysis.
