Links from higher PageRank pages carry more weight for their given anchor text, and for keeping pages out of the supplemental index. Given the rest of the factors all being similar, getting a link from a PR7 page will help you more than getting the same link from a PR3 page.

Some of us have been trying to make this useful for over a week now...
Between all the "no changes for me" posts and other nonsense, it can be quite a hard sell to get someone to actually take some time and analyze the results we see right now, and then discuss them.

There have been changes to pages on established sites, from 0 to a real number and real number to 0... and there are a few sets of backlinks out there.

I do agree, Google is doing some tweaking.

If he hasn't, will you not believe me?

He also hasn't said that getting a link from the Microsoft homepage would be worth more than a sig link from Digital Point. There are many things Matt has never said... doesn't matter though.

It's the basis of the whole algorithm.

And the reason that you will see a backlink update with a PR update, even if the PR update only is for a few pages or sites...

I would still believe you because it makes sense. Why would Google create anything that doesn't effect their algorithm in some way? What you posted makes sense so thanks for sharing that. There are probably lots of other people who might not believe you.

They do, if they drink the PR-is-useless Kool Aid. Some of us reasonably experienced webmasters do not change our thinking. For example, it is well documented a few posts above that (per Google's Matt Cutts) higher PR causes Google to crawl your site more deeply. That is just one clear, valuable SEO benefit of higher PR; there are more.

The PR doesn't cause them to crawl your site more often, It's just that PR and crawl frequency and depth are caused by the same thing. Links.

If a site has 0 PR it means it doesn't have many links and so isn't going to be crawled very often. If a site has PR 5 it means it's got lots of links or links from sites which have lots of links which means there are more links from google to follow which will lead them to your site.

The actual PR number isn't a factor in crawl frequency or depth though.

It's yet another myth caused by people not understanding cause and effect when it comes to PR. PR doesn't cause anything. It's simply the effect of links, The links are the cause or ranking well and crawl frequency.

Yes it has grown.... I'll post a summary so no one else will have to wade through all of the excellent content post by post.

    Here's the summary:

    "When is the update starting?"
"I think this, that, the other...".
"I think it's started because I see changes in my backlinks...".
"I think it's started because I see increases on some of my sites!!!"
"Shut the fck up moron because you're noob without a fckn clue!"
    "So when is the update?"
"I think it's happening now because I see little green things...".
    "Noob get a life!!!"
"Blah, blah, blah about yada, yada, yada"
    "I'm tired of this...".
"I'm tired about hearing about how tired of this you are...".
"WTF? 1500 posts! What do they say?"
    "Nothing important." < me
I'll post an updated summary WHEN THE UPDATE starts.

Let's dispel any myths by seeing what the Google guy Matt Cutts says:
Quote: One of the classic crawling strategies that Google has used is the amount of PageRank on your pages....

    http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/q-a-thread-march-27-2006/

So Google's "crawling strategies" are linked to "the amount of PageRank". What is unclear about that? I and many other DPers understand perfectly well the cause-and-effect aspect of links-and-PR. However, Matt Cutts goes directly to the end product and says that the "amount of PageRank" affects the depth of Google's crawl. The amount of PageRank — the final number. Every time Google does a crawl (which is endlessly) do you think they recompute the links every time (of course not)? Or do they (as Matt says) take a number, an "amount", that is, your PageRank, and use that to help them determine how deep to crawl.
