I have over 34,000 domains and many make me a good deal of profit. However, I'm concerned about those domains that don't make $9/year. I like for everyone on my ship to pull their own weight. I've decided I'm going to simply donate these domains to charity. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience writing off domains that they donated to charity. ps. I simply plan to redirect them to wikipedia.
donating domains to charity, never heard of such a thing. i did donate a vehicle to charity earlier this year!
From an accounting standpoint, if the domain names are not making money then as far as it is worth, the domain name would just be worth the pro-rated domain name registration fees which is still unused. However as for the charities in questions, would they be able to gain more donations, recognition or awareness because of the domain names which you plan to donate ? If not then probably they would not be of any benefits to them. It may be a liability if they need to pay for renewal fees. Why not run a sale on the domain names which you do not plan to renew and then donate the proceeds to the charities of your choice ? I think this will benefit the charity much better and also would allow those who wants your domain names to own them. Even if you sell each domain name for an average of $1 each, it would be about $34,000 which means a lot of mouths would be fed.
