Well, if I remember correctly it was Galileo who hung a pendulum from the roof of some high cathedral and observed that with time the amplitude and direction of the swing changed. That was the frst indication that the Earth was in fact (kind of) spherical.
I must have missed that experiment somewhere, do you have a link of Galileo's exerpiments with a pendulum indicating the world is round? I'm not challenging you here, just looking for more info on that. Thanks.
There's a little bit mentioned under the 'Physics' heading in the Wikipedia article. It doesn't provide a full appreciation of the experiment - one of the negatives of having non-scientists being able to edit the content.
He confused the Bible with the koran somehow. All them pillars and the flat earth thing... But I thought it was on the turtles back or are the pillars on the turtles back? Science is a funny thing, because the scientist thought the earth was flat for quite some time despite those who told them the earth was round.
YES! It is a flat disc that rides upon the top of 4 elephants which in turn ride upon the back of a giant celestial turtle. At least thats what we believe here in Ankh-Morpork!
Oh yeah? Well just be sure not to drink the water or eat any fish hardy enough to survive in the river!
You do not have any verses to back this up... Isaiah 40:22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth... The vatican used to believe the earth was flat... but it's no where in the Bible. The Bible doesn't say anything about the earth being the center of the universe either, that was also the vatican.
