Domain extensions? is this list correct?

    Ok,

    I just found this:

    http://data.iana.org/TLD/tlds-alpha-by-domain.txt

If I'm correct, it's a list of all the domain name extensions that are available (as opposed to .com/.net/......)

Does anyone have any insider knowledge about this? Are all of these still around, and able to be registered?

    Thanks!

You can't register all of them. There are restrictions on some TLDs. For instance, you can't register .ca unless you have a canadian address and, of course, you can't just go and register a .gov, etc.

For some reason I thought the only ones off limits were .edu, .mil, and .gov...

I had no clue that there were that many extensions...

    .TT could be neat...

That's what I was just thinking...

I usually use godaddy... and they don't offer some of these... What's the best place to find exotic extensions like that?

From having a quick look at that list, it does look like all the extentions. Certain ccTLDs have restrictions so you can't register them unless you meet those conditions, eg. .ca, .au, etc. If you want to know if there are conditions or more info on each extention, just go to Wikipedia & type in that extention, all of them are listed there

iDotz has a couple of exotics but mostly you'd have to go to http://nic.xx (xx being the country code) and registering them there.

The exotics can have hefty price tags or stupid management though so beware!

.CAT is only available for Catalan language and ICANN has expressly prohibited the use of this TLD domain for pages about cats.

.GB stop being used a long time ago in favour of UK.

.ME isn't on this list, but will be the ccTLD for Montenegro once they sort themselves out.

Having said about .ME, there is no .RS which will be Serbia's new Country-Code.

Luckily, they both continued to use the .YU extension (Yugoslavia) even though the country did not exist anymore. Otherwise, we would be scrapping ANOTHER Country-Code, .CS. It used to be Czechoslovakia's before they parted company and was assigned to Serbia and Montenegro but was never used.

Also, .GB is still available to be used (Edit: It's just fallen into Disuse I believe), it hasn't been dropped at all. Infact, I'm pretty sure there is nothing stopping the use of .GB.

I'm pretty certain your information is incorrect - but if I'm wrong and it is available for registration, please let me know where/how as I'll be happy to pay thousands of pounds to register a few .GB domains :).

The .ME ccTLD is going ahead, details on the progess can be found at http://89.188.44.88/nic/

.GB isn't administered as such, there's no usable domains on it and as I said above, it's in disuse. But it can still be revived I suppose.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.gb

It says there is still one DNS entry for .gb but that it is no longer used.

In reality, it isn't used, isn't administered and if ICANN had any sense, they'd drop it. (It could then be used by a country that will actually use it!)
