This is hilarious as it has nothing to do with hacking. Changing your agent name and/or type and the way it shows up to the web pages visited is a very old trick. For Unix users this is even more simple.

Anyway, a good post. Thx for bringing this up!

some websites restrict users from seeing certain areas of the site unless you are a subscriber but they allow googlebot to crawl and index these pages.....IF you trick the site to think you are Googlebot, you will be able to see these areas....

It's a pretty neat trick. Depending on what you do with it I'd say it is technically cracking if you use it to get around a password. As for it's legality, again I think it has to do with what you do with it.

Also, please learn the (albeit now blurred) difference between hacking and cracking. ;)

Has no one thought of simply using the google cache to view the pages restricted only to the googlebot?

Would this then make google hackers for providing premium rate members only content to the masses?

i used the googlebot agent trick last week and my isp came to my home and took my computer and said i was banned from the internet. so i use my microwave oven hooked up to my t.v. to connect to the internet now. much faster connection, i must say. wish i would have thought of it sooner JK :)

we should not get blame to trick the site into accessing their restriction site.
they should be blame, they tricked us. they show their result differently from what google sees.

isnt it consider blackhat if what SE bots see is different from what human see.

sites like expert exchange, the solution is in google result, but when click, it requires you to be member to view solution.
