If they are in the public domain, you can do whatever you want with them.

I am not aware of any list of public domain movies.

In the US, copyright lasts for many decades. Movies from before 1923 no longer have copyright protection. No other movies will automatically fall under public domain until 2019. That leaves movies that are specifically put into the public domain by the copyright holders. This will not include most commercial movies.

Here are some links that have some lists. Even if it is on a list, check to make sure that it really is in the public domain.

    Various PD vids:

    Horror movies:

    From Wiki:

Again, these lists may be inaccurate so double check.

Archive.org has thousands of public domain films you could actually download or stream. Here's a link: http://www.archive.org/details/moviesandfilms

Watch out on Archive.org as well. I would guess that Warner Bros. has not given up the copyright for the Merrie Melodies' from the 40's that are there. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. When in doubt, double check.

There are some TV programs that are in the public domain. For example, the first season of Beverly Hillbillies is, I believe.

Many, if not all, of those are not in the Public Domain.

What makes you think that is in the Public Domain? Why would you post something like that without actually knowing - how does that help anyone?

Wiki indicates that the first two seasons are in the public domain because the copyright extensions were not filed. Of course, wiki is not always right. And even if it is, you still have to be careful as any music in the shows may have its own set of copyright issues
