I was not thinking on user agent cloaking. I was thinking on the new Google feature called Site Authentication.
But after reading that article again, the trick shown on this forum will not work. You can't obtain passwords nor access to restricted areas that way.

what about legality, or more accurately TOS-compliancy, on the part of the websites? showing different content to googlebot than to other users... i woulda thought that's a no-no.

Changing your user agent is not hacking. It's not like there is a law mandating you use a specific user agent.

How is this hacking? Hacking would be if he say, cracked the root password to the server and then downloaded the files.

Actually it is completely different, the results might be the same, but it is different.

Example -- I can work real hard and earn a thousand dollars. Or I can punch someone in the face at the atm, take their money, and get a thousand dollars.

Two different approaches, yet the same end result.

Just because he is seeing information that was supposed to be shielded from his eyes, does not make it or crime or anything close to hacking. Sneaky? yes, it is sneaky. Informative? Yes very informative, this post will HELP people who have sites set up this way, and change their security measure's so people can't access the data like this.

Completely agree. That's like DP having a Forum that says "You can only read this forum if you paid $10." And you enter it without paying the $10. That would be DP's lack of any security. Relying on user agent is ridiculous.

If I want to run around with a user agent that says "Googlebot 8.284" and some site shows me different content that it shows "Mozilla FireFox" that is their problem, not mine. I have no obligation to give them my real user agent. It is not illegal to change a UA, and I think someone would be very hard pressed to prove it is. Even if "restricted" content is accessed, that content is not truly restricted if it relies on a completely inaccurate and insecure method of restriction.

That's like suing a robot for not following robots.txt. Good luck. If your ISP is incredibly stupid they might kick you off for it, IF they receive a complaint. So that part is somewhat valid. (I've been kicked off some for less, a long time ago.)

But illegal? Seriously doubt it. If anyone faces jail time, or even a fine, for changing their useragent, it's time to leave the fascist state you live in.

It's fairly simple. Their IT should know to filter by IP address, not UA. UA and referers are unreliable, at best.

get banned from what? are you kidding me...I used this technique before and I was able to browse paid forums....A lot of them wised up and fixed the error but some haven't

These sites have more to worry about for cloaking than I do.

I don't see how modifying information on my browser is illegal...especially when it is giving the site information about me

I've seen people on my site with the google useragent info. I ban the IP if it does they do not match the standard bot addresses!

However, I have FireFox set to show my useragent as my webpage, in hopes that some random webmaster will check it out ;)

In your addressbar type ABOUT:CONFIG then filter for USERAGENT.

    It's the one with general.useragent.extra.firefox

Just add in your custom string.
